Whats the difference between restricted and open in dressage

I know its about previous scoring but I've just done my first test on my Mare and i was competing against a girl i know (under 16 im over 16) and she was restricted and i was open - but neither of us had competed there before and she has only done one test before?
 
Generally, you're open if you've scored over 60% in a dressage test on that horse at that level if it's not BD... If you're doing BD I don't know exactly but it's based off points which are awarded if you get placed I think!
 
It depends on the venue for unaff. Some it's do with scores, some with placings, and obviously requires you to put the right thing on the entry. Some seem to make it up, or what you've put on the entry doesn't bare much relation to what you end up in ;) However I also compete at a venue that doesn't ask you to put a section on the entry form that will, let's say, run 2 prelims and a novice in an evening, and if you are entered in the novice you are 'O' for the prelim you're entered in. It took me about 3 visits to fathom out that's how they worked it, I just kept collecting the rossettes that I'd never have got if I'd been in the much larger 'R' section, and was entitled to purely for being brave/foolhardy enough to attempt the novice on a horse that wasn't really ready lol
 
Did you enter the open section or should you have been restricted?
If you didnt put restricted on your entry they normally put you in the open.
