Firstly, hello! This is my first ever post although I have lurked for a little while - what a knowlegeable bunch you all are! ( Hoping that a little flattery will get me somewhere

My question is what's the difference between all the oils you can feed?
When I went to the local feed merchants the other day there was cod liver oil, linseed oil, soya oil and omega-3 oil. Do they all do something different or basically do the same thing?
( I ended up buying cod liver oil as it was the cheapest and just wanted something to give my girl a shiny coat!)

Thankies.

Firstly hello and welcome to the mad house.I dont bother with anything oil wise from a tack shop. You can get soya oil,veg oil, cider vinegar from the local supermarket for a quater of the price and they do the same thing.Anything with the name horse near it and the price shoots up.

Any of the ones you mentioned are good for coat and condition but linseed is high in Omega 3 I think anyway.

Just avoid anything labelled as plain old 'vegetable' oil or 'blended' because it will be made from rapeseed which isn't all that good for horses.

Hi, i feed corn oil in the winter to keep the weight on and gives a nice shine, works a treat. Buy a big botle from the supermarket

I spent ages on the internet last year trying to find out which oils were best. From what I remember cod liver oil was best, but not all horses would eat it and corn oil came in second.

So ever since I've feed corn oil, which is very cheap in most supermarkets

Back in the old days in California USA, we used to feed a handfull of flax seed to palominos. It really brought out the "color of a newly minted gold coin" color that the standard called for. Anyone here tried it? Wonder if it would work as well on duns for instance?

IMO - Corn oil is the cheapest if feeding long term - Think someone has mentioned it but Veg oil is not that good for horses - it works for a shiny coat but other oils are from a much better source.

TBH I wouldn't feed Cod Liver Oil either but that is my preference. So it's linseed (expensive) or Corn for me!

I personally don't use Cod Liver Oil, as in my book horses don't eat fish. However, I know most people don't have peculiarities such as my "horses are vegetarian" idea!

Actually I totally agree, and also I avoid fish oils for human use now as a result of concerns over mercury levels in fish. Veg oil is fine for horses.

You know I never thought about the mercury aspect. Good thinking. Although I am American, have an English hubby and he says that it depends where the fish are being taken...well, one way or the other, we have no way of knowing where the oil comes from.
Thanks for pointing that out!
