I think its just that HT used to be run by Hunts, and were done in hunt dress. XC were just Xc events, and in XC colours! Think thats where it comes from.
hunter trials is a showing class because you get your horse going in a nice forward going rhythm and as if they are a hunter and the style of the jump counts too. also there is an individual show after the jumping phase for each person the judge picks. cross country is judged on time and faults over the jumps so there is a major difference. you also wear different things for each one. (hunter trials you wear show jackets etc and criss country you wear cross country colours)
Yes Working hunter is what your explaining Pugs_pal, hunter trails is just a XC competition, not judged on style, just a XC course. Used to be done in hunting dress, but now is just general term used for a XC comp.
I agree with the comment that was made about the hunts used to run them, I remember there was a time where the difference was that you had to open and shut a gate in a hunter trial but not in a cross country!

Yep! Well they used to be exactly what their name suggests, something to test suitability of hunters for a day hunting! So Xc fences, and things like opening gates, doing obstacles.
