He's sturdy little chap, the local saying is a stone a hand (not that I would necessarily agree with that), but he looks like he could easily carry someone heavier than the person riding in the photos. Depends how light they ride apart from anything else. I would have said up to 13 stone though before it became a problem at least.

I put a 16st plus rider on my 14.1 forester who is sturdy, but not as much as yours, purely out of curiosity. Pony looked a bit surprised, but was fine about it (I wouldn't have allowed jumping though) Our 13.1hh forester mare is pretty much always carrying an up to weight load, and does so without difficulty and with great enjoyment. At RC events, they do very well, despite what some would perceive as the mare's "handicap" of a heavy rider, but which doesn't bother her in the slightest. Google the NF pony's history, you will see it was expected of them to carry the men for day's colt hunting. Just there are a lot of the finer types around now rather than the traditional sturdy weight carrying types.

You should see the size of some of the riders who do the weight carrying class at the NF Breed Show where the minimum weight inc saddle is 12 1/2 stone. Equally fairly big men riding the ponies on the drifts, which is HARD work, but the ponies do just fine in spite of their riders.

agree with the above really. probably 12.5/13 stone. they are sturdy ponies and he is a fairly chunky chappy :)

Isn't weight they can carry related to bone measurement? I have a 16hh horse & at a stone a hand there is no way would I put a 16 stone rider on him, he's very fine & light of bone.

However if he was mine I'd prefer to stay around the 11 stone mark although he would be capable of carrying much more.

Weight carrying ability is hard to judge as it depends on so many factors in both horse and rider.

Horses age, amount of bone, fitness, conformation, health and fit of saddle. Rider experience, balance and fitness to name but a few.

To give you an idea, i'm 5'2 and weigh 14 stone (yes' I know I'm obese) I'm reasonably fit, well balanced and apparently I ride 'light' and the smallest pony I ride is a 6 year old fit, healthy 14hh cob with ten inches of bone, his tack fits properly and we do half an hours slow flat work, I wouldn't be happy to do more than that.

My own cob is 14.3hh and I also ride a 15.1hh m/w cob and a 16hh Shire x TB; all are in good health, reasonably fit and have over 9 inches of bone.

He is very sturdy and looks to have plenty of bone. My 13.2 welsh cob carries me at 12 stone no problems whatsoever so I would say yours would easily do the same. Again though it does depend on rider ability.

Lovely pony.

Agree with the above. For every day stuff, fast work, competing etc would say 10.5 to 11 stone however for slow hacks or occasional stuff he could carry more.

The stone per hand is a rough rule for sturdy natives, not TB's
