Just wondering...what is the most number of times you've moved in a year, and did it bother your horse, or did they take it in their stride?
Yes, I know what that's like, being in a situation you want to exit ASAP, and jumping into an equally bad situation, then needing to find somewhere else!We bought our daughters pony in April and he came to the yard she's been having lessons and doing her share pony at. He had been at his previous yard for eight years he settled in brilliantly but due to some vicious bullying we decided to move in September. Admittedly I panicked and didn't look Into things properly was just concerned about moving them asap. Anyway things haven't quite worked out and realized pretty quickly I'd made a mistake have not got a lot of turnout now that winters here. So I'm again looking at moving but not going to rush this time as I need to get things right. Feel so sorry for the poor lad who has been an absolute angel and hasn't done a thing wrong, but feel so guilty about moving him around![]()
twice in 4 months
i moved country with him to a temporary yard while i was house hunting, them moved him home to new house, all within about 4 months. he was fine, but he's a saint for putting up with mei think moving with me helped, not in a 'i'm great and my horse loves me way
' but in the way that it was the same bucket, same rug, same routine so he was fine

She sounds like an absolute starfour times
in january 2011 we moved the horses to a friends house both settled well, then in september i moved to dorset for a job, 3 weeks later i left because it was so awful! moved the horse back home for a week, then moved to oxfordshire for a job - she has settled everywhere we've taken her - she very laid back and very well travelled! after 6months i finished my wp in oxfordshire so we moved home again in april and she settled in again like she'd never been away!
Unfortunately I moved my previous horse 4 times in one year. I moved from the first yard after 3 months because the yard manager was extremely unreasonable, expecting us to put her 7 horses back into their electric fenced field every day as they kept escaping despite having to get to work. I then moved my mare to a yard walking distance from my house but the mud in the mares field was so bad she pulled her tendon and ended up on box rest for 6 weeks and I didn't want that happening every winter plus my friend and I found our own yard. That only lasted for 3 months because my friend and I just couldn't agree on the field management and lack of grazing was concerning me as my mare needed to be out as much as possible. I then moved to a field with another friend but 5 days after moving I had a near fatal fall off my mare just hacking down the road. Once I recovered physically I knew I would never ride her again without a school so I moved to my current yard. I have been on this yard for over 2 years my mare was there for over a year and then I sold her to my friend from the 3rd yard as I just didn't have the confidence for her any more and she was willing to take her on. My new boy and I are very happy at the current yard and I plan to never leave as its taken so long to find it!
I think I might be the current record holder, with 5 times, unless a new challenger posts soon?) heeheehee
1. moved in a hurry away from somewhere I was being viciously bullied...went to a gorgeous but very very expensive place. Loved it. Lost my job, needed to move somewhere as cheap as possible...it was a sad move.
2. moved onto full diy (first time for me), but with all my back injuries, the mucking out and field poo picking turned me into a cripple in constant pain. Unfortunately there was no diy assistance available at all, so I needed to move back onto full livery quickly, (due to severe back pain), again it was a sad move (fabulous people there, nicest yard I've ever been on), but necessitated by back pain.
3. moved onto full livery ASAP, at a local yard, it turned out to be a nightmare, bitchy, horrible, bad atmosphere, my horse was being mistreated very badly (shouted at, hit, etc), my horse was desperately miserable, he hated it. We lasted almost 4 weeks there.
4. Again, in a hurry to find somewhere, chose a place around the corner from me....but it was just bought by a new owner, who decided to completely tear apart the existing house (right next to the school & stables)...think pneumatic drills for hours on end, debris being flung down from the rooftop, diggers, construction workers everywhere, screeching power tools cutting through tiles etc. My horse went into MELTDOWN, uncontrollably shaking throughout his whole body, started box walking, rearing in his stable (hitting his head on ceiling), runny tummy whenever on the yard (stress), riding in the school just was not safe with all that was going on next to it...and the decibel level was like trying to ride on the runway at Heathrow. Decided within 24 hours to pick up and go, I can't have my horse like that, he could do injury to himself.
5. Today - Safely installed in my new place...it's one I almost went to (instead of 2.), only reason I didn't go is because it's 30 min from home. Great atmosphere, great people, lots of yard event - lunches etc...he settled quickly, and seemed relieved to be away from all the noise of the last one. Poor mite was dead on his feet, shattered, he hasn't slept in a few nights due to stress and box walking...he'll have sweet dreams tonight.
and there may be a 6th....I now have a job offer in Europe, and might be moving over there (with my horse) in the New Year.
Overall, he's fine. My highest and utmost priority is him. If he is unhappy, or being mistreated, I will move him rather than tolerate bad behaviour from people. He'll get over a move. He won't get over being mistreated...so, he has not at all been negatively affected. In fact, it has made him adapt to new situations much better, I think he is more confident. And I am there to cuddle him and reassure him, and as long as he has me, he'll settle.
