Looking at 3.5T boxes at the moment, and have come accross a VW LT35. It looks to be in really nice condition, but it's 27 years old... would you consider it?

Spares are very often the issue with older vehicles. Check that spares like brake parts, headlights, exhausts are easily available.

What's the best way to get an inspection? This particualr box isn't THAT local (about an hour away), so local garages wouldn't be an option :).

thanks for the advice on spares, hadn't thought of that!

I've got a 1982 LT 35, had loads of work done on it and spares are not a problem; good thing about VW's is there are a lot of enthusiasts who restore and repair them, they even have a forum to talk about them (really!!)

If it's in good condition or you are prepared to do some work on it and the price reflects that then go for it!!

Re inspection, there are people who advertise horsebox inspections. I have a mechanic who had premises at the yard i kept my horse & lorry until I moved 14 years ago. He continued to look after and nurse my aged Ford D series until my beloved partner wrote it off in my drive against the neighbours wall. I trusted him enough to pay him to inspect the lorry I have just bought and reinspect the work he said needed to be done. The two visits costs me £200 but it was well spent against the work needed doing and my peace of mind.
The fact he let me buy it all was a miracle. When I bought first time around in 1984, the first 2 lorries I took him to see he told me not to buy whatever the price. Very embarrassing when you have been having a nice cosy chat with the seller over tea and biscuits. Anyway none of this is too helpful unless you live within an hour or so of M25 j25, in which case I will give you his contact details.
