a mare can have a first foal?

Just curious

we have a 19 year old (well bred, papered) TB who was rescued. She was underweight, so was fed well and given time to recoup, then ran with the stallion. She had funny seasons and filled with fluid so in the end was PG'd, and took right away. Her vulva was stitched, and a week after having her stitches out she gave birth to a strapping colt.

She was scanned on friday and has fallen pregnant again naturally. We're thrilled. She loves being a mum

, it's given her a new lease of life.

Isn't the rule of thumb that it is best to have a first foal before 14?

I know there are loads of exceptions though.

Bit like humans I suppose - lots of perfectly healthy older mums around although the risks are a bit higher.

Ours had her first and only foal at 18yo and it was entirely straightforward - took first timne by AI. As has been said, higher risks but often works out ok. The fact a mare hadn't had a foal before their teens wouldn't stop he trying at all.

Good luck

mine had hers at 16.it was her first.she caught first time AI.
depends on mare-as long as shes healthy you can but try.worth getting scanned day after covering to see if shes trown up fluid as they can give jabs to clear it and increase the chaances of them keeping.
