and how fast does it rot down in comparison to straw? can it be spread on land like rotted straw can? (rest of yard is on straw so need something that is similar in rotting down, but unedible to ponies).

Generally take longer than straw to rot, but if mixed with straw will rot quicker.

You could try Hemcore, or one of the mecicated chopped straw alternatives.

Ecobed (chopped cardboard) rots down very quickly, makes great mulch, fwiw, and is cheaper than shavings.

Try Nedzbedz..rape straw. Rots down very quickly and great for the garden.

The bedding you are asking about sounds like it might be Cushion-bed, it is a woodchip bedding and comes in white bag with green (I think) writing and is made by Giffords.

Dont know how it will rot down, would suspect not as quickly as straw though.

That's the one, definately wood chip as opposed to shavings.

Aubiose/Hemcore is supposed to rot very quickly and Kerilli highly recommends ecobed (cardboard). Years ago used Hemcore and it did seem to rot quickly but I disliked it as a bed. Cannot comment on the ecobed as not tried it.

I'm a little particular about bedding, and am normally a strictly straw-bed person. But I'm moving over to rubber matting (to make life easier and provide warmth).

How quickly do shavings rot down?

You can use straw on rubber mats but guess that then removes the ease of mucking out!

We use straw on rubber, it works great. Otherwise if you can't use straw for allergy reasons you could try Bliss.

If you want a straw type bed, try Nedzbedz which is dust extracted chopped straw which in our saddlers costs £5 per bag so not expensive.. or Beddown excel which I use currently which is chopped straw mixed with soft shavings, in a 40% to 60% ratio- I love it because its absorbant, smells amazing even after 3/4 days and only costs £5.40 a bag and they are 25ltr bags so one bag lasts me 7/8 days and would probably do the same on rubber mats. I highly reccomend.

we have a native who eats his bedding, so would rather use something which hasnt got straw in it. So, althought I love straw beds I can't use one, hence me looking for an alternative which is easy to use and rots down quickly.
