Flairs up every summer in the exactly the same spot. First year there were two (you can still see the pale scar left from the other one on his lip near the current one) and we thought it was a bot larvae sore but what are the chances of a bot travelling to the same spot every year for the past 3 years???? In any case my horse is very carefully wormed and have any bot eggs removed daily (rarely have any as are well rugged in knee length fly rugs). Seems weird its mine that gets a bot worm sore in the same place every year. Anyone else had something like this annually and could it be something else other than a bot larvae exit sore?

My gelding suffered from these the first 2 years I owned him and similarly it was only ever in the summer. The first year he was in a field where buttercups were present and these 'burns' occurred, they caused him no pain and depending where they flared up could still be ridden. The exact same happened to him the second year but he was in a different field where buttercups werent present but according to my YO buttercups used to be present in this field before it was treated so he suspected that whatever causes these and is related to buttercups was still in the grazing. Don't know if this helps in the slightest?!

Hes been wormed with regularly with Invermectin, Moxidectin and Praziquantel wormers this year and his worm counts are always negative. Really cannot stress how its unlikely to be bot related. Especially not three years running, surely? Hes homebred and been effectively wormed since before birth!!! *scratches head*

well i thought the same- willow had been wormed to cover bots not long before the sores appeared.

all i can tell you is that she had two, i wormed again for bots, moved onto a clean area of pasture and left them alone. they went away by themselves, and caused her no discomfort. ;)

couldnt be anything to do with buttercups or plant related- the sores were not in the area of the mouth that would be in contact while grazing, and no other horses in the field were affected. ;)

eta: i bred willow myself also- so know she has been well wormed from day one! never seen them on any of my other horses either??!! vet had no idea and suggested to leave them alone and see! :D

Reading this old post http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=372556 they mention them being herpes related. Does that mean its a form of EHV? I only ask as I have a mare I might like to breed from down the line out with this one. I dont know much about EHV except that its not something youd want a broodmare to contract. If it is, and the broodmares contracted it would vaccinating her down the line help or would she not be able to be bred from.
 
I posted photos of these, I never had a conclusive answer to what they were but I
a) wormed with ivermectin (double dosed)
b) treated with anti b and topical flamazine
c) moved my horse from the bare crap field she was in to our field at home.

Within the week they had gone ;) you can draw your own conclusions! Habronemas, herpes, contact injury... whatever, one of those things worked :D
 
I have seen sores like this before, turned out it was a reaction to the fertilizer. Do the sores coincide with the paddocks being fertilised? Some horses are much more sensitive than others.

A long shot but ? :D
