Does anyone live close to Gatwick Airport? If so, what's the weather like there and what's the forecast for Wednesday afternoon? I have to collect a relative from there and having just logged on to Gatwicks website, (midnight) it says they have their runways shut and could be shut for 24 hours.

(Edited to say - sorry its in New Lounge - but thought people might see and respond quicker if it was in here).

Hi My mum has just come from Gatwick & says roads pretty bad now but hopefully will be ok when the gritters (or if?) they come out.

I think your biggest problem will be the M25, we have more snow forecast for tomorrow afternoon

I could do without this, my horse is stuck at Liphook Equine Hospital. He was supposed to come home Friday but if the forecast is correct they have said I will have to leave him there longer as they are snowed in already and the forecast says there is much more to come

The runway is apparantly shut right now, and I think easy jet services are all suspended, imagine there will be huge delays to flights.

The M25 is bad between juncitons 4 and 11 by what they said on the radio.

Getting to gatwick should be fine really as its all main road/motorways in and out and as above the gritters will be out on that, its the smaller roads that are causing the biggest problems.

We live about 10 mins from gatwick, I havent seen any planes land or take off yet today, we have plenty of snow and it's still falling, I would say it's nearer to 6 inches. I think the M25 is open as is the M23 but doubt all lanes are open, so if you're going to do the journey then leave at least twice as long to get there, and go sit in macdonalds if you're early. Ah just heard on the radio that flights in and out are still suspended, so guess check before you leave.

Thanks everyone. I'm keeping logged into Gatwick and will phone relative up now - thankfully they are aware of what weather is like here so are expecting flight delays/cancellations. Again thanks all.

Thanks "E" - you can guess just how upset we are at the thought of him having to stay away for a bit longer!!!!! Thanks for the offer but sure we'll get him home some day!!!!

I went to collect my parents there last night and the airport was closed. They have been diverted to Paris and are still stuck there.

The weather is forecast to get worse. Even after my mum had called to say she was in Paris, the internet was still saying that the flight was on time so I would make doubly sure the flight is coming in before setting off.

The A23 last night was COVERED in snow, I didn't get above 20mph the whole way and the M25 wasn't much better.

Not looking forward to the 2 hour drive tonight..............and that's if they even manage to get home!

We were meant to fly to Rome this morning but our flight was cancelled

It looks like Easyjet at least have cancelled everything for today as they've already cancelled the later flight as well. We stayed over last night so are relieved that we managed to get home in one piece. The motorways weren't too bad when we left at 6am as everyone was being sensible, but they were expecting a lot more snow.

Just had a text message come through to my phone to say flight is cancelled and to either get a refund (not much good when he's stuck abroad is it) or change your flight via internet (and to come back within 30 days).

The problem is - he's over 80 years old and needs asssitance for travelling so not able to sort things out for himself the other side, so if I re-book a flight for him - who knows when to book it for? Will the flights be on tomorrow, or the next day, or when? Stupid situation isn't it. Apart from that, the medication he has, runs out tomorrow so if he's stuck out there, he will need to contact medical help.

What happens in the scandinavian countries or russia when they have snow? Their countries don't come to a grinding halt do they!

If he has travel insurance give them a ring and explain medication situation and ask for advice. I have found that if you are only asking for advice they tend to be alot more helpful, than if asking them to actually do something!

Apparently he went to the chemist there and they provided him with what he needs - they are able to sell the drugs over the counter as opposed to him needing a prescription over here.

Latest news - just heard that the airport are hoping to put him up with all the other cancelled flights and have told all Easy Jet passengers that any flight through until Saturday is now cancelled to this country. So its now a fight to get as many passengers into hotels before they get full up.

He's at the airport now and our relatives won't leave him until they know whether he's going into a hotel or not. Otherwise they will take him back to their home.

Phone calls and emails from me to the airline have proved useless.

Well dad is stuck now until a flight on 11th January. His options were to go to the airport every morning at 10.30am and wait, or to book the first available flight which is on 11th January, so our relatives who he is staying with, have taken him back to their home again and there he will stay.

Now I have to phone the insurance company tomorrow as his medical cover runs out today. Now we just see whether the weather allows him to return next week.
