Trying to work out which wormer to use for this spring - there's obviously a few to choose from but all have different ingredients at different prices so I'm trying to work out whats best value for money.

I do worm counts the rest of the year and only worm in spring (or when required depending on the counts) since tapeworm isn't often picked up on them. So mine shouldnt have built up any resistances.

You need to worm with Equest Pramox if you didnt worm for encysted redworm in December? These are the most dangerous worm for the horse and they are also not detected by a FWEC. They burrow into the gut wall where they stay until Spring when they emerge en-mass causeing severe colic, diarrhoea and often death (condition known as larval cyathostominosis)

Worm with Equest Pramox as that contain Moxidectin which will kill the small redworm and Praziquantel which will kill the Tapeworm (if your horse has them.)

Hope that helps :D

just a slight word of caution, Pramox is very powerful being a 2 in 1 against both tapeworm and redworm in one. Because of that, horses with a heavy worm burden can struggle to cope with it and there have been some reports of adverse reactions if the horse has a heavy burden of 'hidden' worms (encysted/tape).

If you want to play it safe, the active ingredients in Pramox are also available in standalone separate wormer products.

For tapeworm, praziquantel in Pramox is also the wormer ingredient in Equitape

For encysted redworms (which I completely agree with the previous poster you def need to also worm for every year even with clear worm counts as they can be fatal and dont usually show up on the worm counts), moxidectin, the active ingredient in Pramox can also be found in Equest.

Just to give you the choice as I wasnt sure if you were worming for encysted redworms regularly (in which case Pramox probably fine and will be cheaper) or not (in which case it might be better to do tapes and encysted separately in stages with a couple of weeks gap in between).

I used Equimax for this worming session. It contains ivermectin and praziquantel. It is for the treatment and control of adult and immature gastrointestinal roundworms, lungworms, bots and tapeworms in horses. http://www.wormers.co.uk/acatalog/Equimax-1.html This is a website i use for my wormers they offer a huge selection and super fast delivery i had it within 2 days and for 98p delivery very worth it.
