I have seen both in my time, and have read with interest some posts on here and i really do not know what is the worst.

I have seen mares put to stallions that have the worst confirmation/attitude possible and I have seen complete and utter numpties that should not own a goldfish try and "break in" a youngster.

I am sure it is the Chicken and Egg -i.e if less horses were bred- less numpties would buy them - but i personally think the worst is when a pregnant mare is sold... why on earth do this?

I refused to sell a foal to someone who was more interested what colour the foal was and whether she was good to handle as (in their words) they didn't have much experience and were nervous around horses.....

Still have my beautiful Palamino baby and am so glad I didn't let her go to a total numpty.....

Breeding I think, as thats intentional (most of the time

) whereas clueless people can hopefully improve, and we all were clueless once.

Breeding should be left to people who know what they're doing, and not always pure breds, I like mongrel horses

Fair enough they maybe shouldn't buy a youngster, but they're clueless so don't know any better do they

breeding imo, all those little welshies and cross bred ponies that go through the sales straight to slaughterman when they are barely 6months old

just saddens me so much.
Although some people may be clueless when buying a youngster some may go into it with the very best intentions ie rescuing one of these poor souls from their fate.
I also hate the huge amount of racehorses that seems to be bred and so very little of them actually make it to the track and even then they may not be good enough and go to potters, just such a waste of a beautiful life. If they are going to almost certainly have to endure this end so quickly inot their young lives , why breed them in the 1st place,

something that i feel very strongly about. I bought my precious boy off of some1 who calls themselves a hobby breeder 'we just do it as a hobby not to make money' i got him very cheap and i was very close to telling her dont breed them again! there are to many horses in this world already that need good caring homes they are so cheap you just dont know where they will end up. total ignorance imo. but i guess this will always continue

Surely the clueless buying of an indiscrimately bred youngster has to be the worst of all?

In all seriousness I agree with the sentiment above, novice people buying youngsters is foolish and ill advised- but ultimately at least they have ignorance as an excuse!!

The people responsible should be the breeders (the owners of mares AND the owners of stallions!) and also those (if they don't happen to be the same people) those that allow the sale of those youngsters to the forementioned novices...

As it goes I think this is also the case for many dog breeds in the UK

...

It seems to me that alot of these people have their own selfish agenda and don't tend to see beyond their own needs or desires when considering getting their animal pregnant

...Whether the decision to breed is for cash, to calm their mare/bitch down, to give her a use during injury, or simply to experience the "joy" of new life from having a foal/pups- they only seem to visualise the gestation and weaning period and rarely appear to realise this new life is going to be around for a couple of decades!!

Err... that turned into a bit of a rant there didn't it?!- sorry

They are both equally as shocking!

That's what I thought as soon as I read the title of the thread.

they are both as bad as each other, but at the moment i have a real hate for indiscriminate breeders as i (stupidly) bought a foal that i felt would have died in the field if it had been left any longer.
She is an appie X & as she wasnt born spotty the breeder didnt like her so threw her in a rubbish ridden field to grow up as she could. She is menat to make about 14.2 but due to her poor start in life at 9mths shes only just pushing 10hh. When we picked her up her ribs, hips & spine were all protruding, even under a very thick coat. She had never been handled or wormed, & some of the worms that came out of her once wormed were easily 15cm long.
All the other broodmares & foals were underweight, she even had her own stallion that was skin & bone. I think she had found the niche for selling horses in such a poor state that any self respecting horse owner just cant walk away. In addition she had 'miniture horses' that were breeding in a field & openly told me that 2 foals had died after she had given them equest pramox! I was left speechless!
Before breeding Dex i thought very hard that it was the right thing to do, if his mum hadnt been right i wouldnt have done it. Hes in a home for life & has been bred with me in mind. & Alice was bought as his playmate & she will be with me until shes at least 3 (probably for life knowing me!) but again she is very well bred & already has a good showing record.
Sorry rambled on a bit

I think the KNOWLEDGEABLE breeding of;

A Too many racehorses
B Overbred, unhealthy, ailment prone, overpriced, over-rated, pedigree mutants of any species or breed

is as bad, if not worse than the numpies breeding or buying youngsters.

Both as bad as each other!!
Theres a family at our yard bought a 4yr old pony for a kid of about 9/10yrs old. Family know NOTHING (thankfully on full livery) bought tack from a car boot, kid wanted to jump so they bought her a young pony!! Shes now terrified of said pony who to be fair is a total basket case sometimes. She would have done much better getting older and wiser like our pony, hes a great all rounder and taught lots of kids the ropes, but hes no plod either. The kid learned to "ride" in a riding school with fields full of ragwort, no qualified staff, rides taken out by young teenagers, you get the sort of place!
They only tried pony in a school at walk and trot and she was ok anything else or try to ride outside the school she hasnt a clue what is wanted of her. Only lunges one way! Shes now started pulling the kid around on the way in/out of the field and doing little rears when shes ridden. Probably end up being sold and passed around poor pony. I wish i could buy her but i dont have a small enough rider.
