Had vet out to horse yesterday about his swollen sheath and he has also got a fluid odema on his stomach which is large, flat and soft he seemed concerned and took a blood test which i will be getting the results to on tuesday, was wondering if it was something to do with his kidneys?
Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

Fly bites? Lots of midges at the moment. Is the swelling on his midline? If it is it could be allergy to bites.

I had to have a pony tested for Cushings and she had to have two tests 24hours apart. That was 3 years ago though, so the test may have changed. Is his coat thicker this year than before? Is he passing more water do you think?

oh dear...well dont wish to alarm you...but my merlin suffered this whilst in hospital his whole belly blew up and so did his hind end incl legs...he also had an odema....
I really really hope your lad is going to be OK...

Merlin didnt have cushings, he was tested for kidney stones too...and everyhhing under the sun...his left kidney was larger than right...strange!!

Please I dont wish to alarm you as I said, but do wish him all the very best in treatment and hope he is OK.

Please keep us informed, I'd like to know too...what the outcome of treatment is

sending you hugs and get well soon vibes for pony

Ok, well that's hopeful as it is a major symptom. How old is your boy?

You are obviously very worried. Could you give your vet a call and just ask him/her to talk through their thinking again?

Tuesday is a long time to wait when you are so concerned.

I'll have everything crossed it's nothing too serious:)

Another though "(sorry!) has he been stable bound, has the fluid accumulated since then?

Sorry about the 20 questions I'm just trying to get it straight in my head!

He is supposed to be 13 but wondering if hes maybe older he has had a fewa problems arthritis since he was 8 been on bute for the last year, he is stabled only at night

A friends horse had this, along with a severely upset stomache. oddly. Vet ran hundreds of tests at vast expense and could only come up with the fact it was protein escaping. Did nothing, besides tell owner to feed dry hay and the horse recovered ok. He does still fill up from time to time and mostly for no obvious reason.Only obvious reason is the lush grass in spring but it doesn't always happen then, He can still have it occur in deepest winter when on hay and short feed only, but it doesn't seem to make him uncomfortable or ill, and the vet hasn;t been needed since the initial "mystery bout".
Hope your boy is ok, and recovers well.
