I'm picking up a new (to me) trailer tomorrow. What is the best security device to buy? 'Y insurance states wheel clamp or hitch lock, which is better?

Both ideally. Problem with wheel clamps is they need to be on one of the back wheels otherwise its been known to tilt the trailer onto the back wheels and drive off with it whereas hitchlock means it can still be pushed/nudged and moved with the strength of a couple men just not car. If you really needed one or the other id go for the hitch lock though - if they want to steal it then make them work damn hard for it. As to where to get them its always worth checking out the local caravan shops - most have the most reliable makes with sales on now that winters come around.

I've gone for a hitch lock, just a clamp and the trailer could still be towed and/or that wheel removed possibly!

I have a 'stronghold' trailer hitch lock, about £70 but very secure.

Have both, can be chained and lifted with just hitchlock. We were also advised to keep trailer ball hitch locked on car when at events and even travelling if you will be stopping. We bought a trailer new and dealer told us he had been meeting one buyer at services and was only feet away talking to them when theives started trying to unhitch the brand new trailer!!. At events and shows you can be away fron trailer for some time so wise not to give people opportunity to try to pinch it.

The actual hitch will have a lock with a barrell lock, you hitch up as normal then lock using key provided, so effectively you are locking trailer to car so it cant be unhitched.

I have a hitch lock and a super sturdy bike lock type thing that loops through the fencing that the trailer is next to x

I use a ''bulldog'' hitch lock and find them brilliant! They also allow you to lock the horsebox onto your jeep. I find this particularly useful at shows and for beach trips (where I've heard a few stories of horseboxes getting stolen).
