Sorry this has probably been asked millions of times before but we seriously have a hay shortage at my yard and the only stuff we can purchase at the moment is new stuff (baled about 3 weeks or so ago) or last years haylage, i don't want to use haylage at the moment as the grass is still very rich where I am and the boys don't need any further energy or weight gain!! thanks

I started using mine last night. I checked the bale when i opened it. It smelt nice was dry. I shall only feed in small amounts, 15hh cob, one small wedge over night in the stable. He is strip grazed during the day.

I'd just have a look at it, if it smells like it should use it. Bit like people food really. It anoys me when people throw out stuff a day after its date when its perfectly fine. use by/ best before dates are a guide. (sorry minor rant)

I have started using mine already and normally do about this time of year,it is a month old and as long as you are sensible re: Laminitics etc then there is not a problem.

Brilliant - thanks all for your help - I guess I am just the old fashioned type who always believed it couldn't be fed till about 3 months later!
Landyandy - sorry to be thick but what is the reasoning behind soaking it? I only normally soak if it is dusty?? thanks

We nearly always have to start using new hay pretty soon after it is baled. As long as it is cool and dry and smells good then I dont think there is a lot to worry about. Sometimes I open a bale the day before to let it breathe a bit.

I think that it is an old wives tale that you shouldn't use it before Christmas.

(Awaits the rant from the old wives!!!!)

not only can hay be soaked for removing dust, but also for removing nutrients,(goodness). so if you think it is a bit too rich at moment. this may help a little. not sure if i am correct in saying this.

i usually wait 4 months. just be carefull there is no heat in the bale or it will cause your horse to colic get the bale pull it all apart and shake it up it will dry and breathe better that way plus soak it for an hour!
