When do u worm and what product?

Everyone probably has hugely different views and routines for worming so just interested to see what months and with what products people worm/use throughout the year??

Do your yards worm all horses together and keep horses in afterwards? Mine doesnt and i'v worked on 3 other yards which didnt either.
 
Personally, I worm strategically. I use Pramox for tapeworm and encycsted redworm in Spring and Autumn. I don't routinely worm apart from this, but do worm counts periodically and will worm with Equest if required (hasn't been necessary yet).

My yard doesn't have a worming schedule, its up to the individual. But I've been on a yard which had a strict policy in the past.

At the moment my horse is out either on his own or with a limited amount of others, in a paddock that I poo pick and is looked after. If he was in a herd on a big livery yard, I'd prefer a yard policy I think.

However I put on the yard board when I'm ordering my wormers and normally end up ordering wormers for the whole yard - Thus everyone benefits from the good discounts you can get on multiple orders.

At the moment my horse is out on her own in a paddock I poo pick daily. The other liveries whose horses are in a herd normally all worm together (but that's partly because I order the wormers). We don't leave ours in after worming.
 
i do the same as halfstep worm spring and autum with pramox and ever 10 b12 weeks get a poo count done if the come back negative dont worm if they cme back anything more then with with the wormer that should be used for that time of year. worm counts are good but you can not use these in winter due to the worms going dorment so you will get a negative result and poo counts dont detect tapeworms eycsted and bots so you still have to worm for them!

That is certainly not true, as my horse's worm counts that I have had done in January and February have not all been zero. One was 165 and one was 450. I also had a positive blood test for tapeworm in January. I think these tests are a real eye-opener, as it's so easy to assume a healthy horse is not carrying any intestinal parasites.

This has been said a lot recently, and it is not correct.

I have used worm counts for seven years now, and have rarely had any count above <50epg, which means I usually worm spring and autumn wih Equitape. If a count shows worms then I will use Pramox instead, or Equest, depending on time of year.
 
well with the company i am with always so with the worms lying dormant in winter you will not get the full picture of the burden if they have on with them going into the gut wall you will probally be getting the epg of the worms that dont go dormant so if it was 165 that could of been the ones out side not in side. and for the blood test you do that for tapeworms and yes that will be a corrective showing coz these is coming from blood i did not say that about blood i was saying you dont always get a correct count from a fecal egg count in winter!
 
i am no vet but blood is an excellent to know if your horse has tape worms. poo counts detect every thing else bar bots and enysted worms as long as you take your counts at the right time of year worm spring and autum for tape worms poo pick your fields you can not go far wrong . make sure if your horse is in with horses they are on the same programme as you!
 
just before you worm in april take a count then then i usually take one ever 10 to 12 weeks until i worm in november then start counting again spring!
 
Worm count when you are due to worm. If you get a high reading worm and then they recommend you worm count again a couple of week later to check your wormer has been effective/no resistance.

Worm counts from faecal samples won't detect encysted, bots or Tape Worm (so you still need to worm for these).

Blood tests can be done to check for Tape worm, but most people I know just have faecal counts and worm for Tape as a matter of course.
