When do Welsh Cobs stop growing?

Hello

As per title really. I am shortly going to be looking to buy a new pony and am particularly keen on welsh section D's. I have seen one for sale that I am contemplating going to see which is 14.1 at 6 years old and I wondered whether he is likely to grow any more?

My friend has has her section D mare from a 6 year old and said she didn't grow any more after that but I have always been led to believe that cobs and natives quite often don't mature until 7 or 8.

Also while I'm on the subject I am 5ft 5 inch and round about 10 stone (maybe a bit more after christmas but only a few pounds and not for long!) would I be too big and be cruel to ride a young pony of this size I don't think I am but could be wrong!

He doesn't look hugely chunky for a section D .

He will have pretty much stopped growing up by 6, but will almost certainly continure to fill out for another year or so.

Re the size - you are absolutely not too big or cruel or anythign like that for riding a 6yr old welsh cob. Fact.
 
Mine levelled out at 6-7 yrs and filled out until he was about 9. But he has obviously had a rough start in life (proved with a hammer shaped dent in his forehead).

Welsh Cobs were designed to pull trailers out of the mouths of mines and were handled by minors- i think they'll handle 10st with ease! If you're still worried have a saddler and a back person come and check you both over!
 
As far as I know, no horse reaches full maturity until 8 years old.
However I doubt you would see much change in the height of the horse after 6 years old.
D's are weight carriers though, they could more than comfortably carry 10st!
 
I bought my Sec D gelding as a five year old and reckon he didnt properly chunk out till last year, age seven. Looks like a proper Cob now:)
 
ditto above...you prob won't get any more height out of him, but his body should mature a bit more...and he should have no probs with you weight/height-wise...:)
There is a school of thought that Welsh Ds are late maturers, but as others have pointed out here, most horses don't mature joint/bone-wise til 7 anyway
 
Oh the back of this how heavy would a sec c carry? 10 stone or less? My boy is 13.2 and I know he isn't meant to get bigger as he is a c but he is growing again. He is four. Going to measure him tomorrow. Do you think he wil?

As I understand it, there is so much mixing of both sec D and sec A bloodlines in the Sec C's, that heights are really variable, so I would look to see what heights the dam/sire made and if you can, look further back in the bloodlines to see what other sections you have in there...and also bear in mind that within the sec D bloodlines alone there is a lot of variation in height anyway
so weight-carrying wise its going to depend but bear in mind sec Cs were originally bred to take farmers out hunting (as far as I'm aware)
I wouldn't worry about a 13.2 sec C carrying 10 stone personally
