I've just reached that point myself with a horse I've owned for 3 years. He just kept growing, to the point where now I just can't get my legs on him properly !! He was at the top end of my height range when I bought him as a 5 year old but I didn't realise then that warmbloods continue to grow much later than most breeds. It's a pity because he's not done anything wrong I just don't feel comfortable on him anymore.

I had been thinking about selling him for the last couple of months but made the decision now because I'm off to Talland for 4 months in the new year and if I don't sell him he'll have to come on a student livery with me which means I won't be able to get back home most weekends to vist my boyfriend and dog.

It was awful debating the decision but now it's made I'm fine with it - although I swear my horse knows something's up because he's been especially cuddly this week !!

Usually when they stop breathing! I have the dubious honour of owning most of mine until they reach the end! And the current batch of poo machines include a 6yr old, a 9yr old and a 12yr old! Oh my poor aching pocket!!!!!!!!!!!
I have sold a 13hh pony that my stepdaughter outgrew, and the sequel to said superpony, who turned out to be a super star event/teamchase pony that frightened the life out of said child, because she was so fast! Stepdaughter now rides my 12yr old mare!

Or you like bringing on young horses and only ever want to keep them for a limited time and then invest the money in another one.
And don't leave it too long so you can sell them when they are worth the most.

Some people just have a horse that suits and decide to keep it for ever more.

I have usually sold on horses, but now I am in my mid 50s I find that the present horse suits me and hope it might even last me to the end of my riding days.
