Hello everyone.

Just wondering when do you all scan your in foal mares? Mine was scanned at 15 days and then again at 18 (twinned before). Vet said to bring her back at 31 - 33 days for heartbeat scan. As it turned out, had to bring her to a different vet for this scan and when we showed up he said if he were me he would have waited until after 40 days because between days 30 and 40 there's a higher risk of losing the foal. Thankfully all is well with the pregnancy, but why do vets differ on these things?!

I might ring the original repro vet and ask him when I should scan again, he is just much further away and I had to get something else with her checked out that the repro vet wouldn't be able to treat! When do you guys opt to scan and if you were me, when would you scan again? Also, who is getting a gender scan and when? Thanks :)

15 to 17 days for initial scan then 26 - 28 for heartbeat scan depending on the state of things when originally covered. We only scan the racehorses at 40 days not the competition mares

Mine was scanned at what was thought to be around 16 days, turned out to be 20, she wasn't rescanned until about 4 weeks later but she was very ill for 2 of those so not exactly normal. the second scan showed fluid but no embryo so re-scanned 2 weeks later and pregnancy found. No further scans after that.

Our TBs are done at 15, 18 and then before 32 days for heartbeat as endometrial cups form soon after this, and even if the pregnancy is lost, the cups continue to secrete eCG which will stop the mare coming back into season for 4months (or so my vet tells me), so if there is something wrong with the pregnancy you can abort and try again if nec, rather than lose the rest of the season. They are then scanned again in September to check all is well
