Hi Everyone!

My Mare is 233 days with her first foal. The last couple of days we have seen the foal moving/kicking. Is this normal at this stage, people have commented how big she is showing compared their mares at the same stage of pregnancy.

I have also noticed she is abit restless in the field - at times walking the fence - which is not like her at all!

She also fell over in field a couple of days ago...

Is this all normal??!! should the foal be kicking this early? i need to worm her but am worried to do so!

My mare is same time as yours, due early to mid June, and she too looks large to me. I am sure i have seen the foal move and kick and my mare reacts at the same time so it must be the foal movements i am seeing. She has changed quite a bit personality wise, she is moody and picky with her food ( would normally eat as much and as quickly as possibly)I had the farrier last week and she almost went down whilst he was doing a fore foot, but i just think she needed a little time to adjust her weight properly. Do you have any pics so we can compare? Mine is a 16.2 ID X always been a big deep mare bit it is all behind and low. My vet is coming tomorrow so will see what her opinion is on her size.

I first felt my mare's foal kicking at 8 months (240 days) no doubting it was the foal, her belly was moving all over and when I put my hand on her under belly I received the biggest kick against it!! My mare hasn't gone off her food at all yet!! Although she does have a very indignant look on her face nowadays!! I think now she is the size of a house! (coming up to 10 months!) she has had enough of being so big and getting kicked all inside!! Her body has now started to show signs of getting ready so fingers crossed for her and a safe arrival of foal! She hasn't stumbled at all, she was even able to rear several times a few weeks ago when my friend lead her in (something spooked her!)!! But she does waddle out to the field!!

It's lovely feeling the first kick as it really brought it home to me that there was a real foal there!!! Good Luck xx

I've been trying to find out about this! Our last (NF) foal was born 10 years ago - but we are expecting a NF First cross foal from our TB Mare this year - last foal born April 23rd - and we were told she had been covered by April 27th and was back in foal. To me - she is very big, but being used to 13hh natives she is big. Also, because she is very laid back we can feel her belly etc. At what point could we see the foal move?

My mare is due early June and she has an incredibly active foal in there. I only have to rest my hand on her belly to get booted!

I deworm as normal, always have, just check that the wormer is safe for in-foal mares. It will say on the packaging.

This was her on Feb 1st, so 7 months. She always looks enormous but is only a tiny little dot. I hasten to add that the foal beside her is completely normal, not some sort of cripple as it appears.

A short coupled mare will often show far more earlier than a big deep long backed mare, here at Angrove stud we see all types of mares coming here and we try to visit them before they foal if owner want us too, to see if they look ok and well.
but dont worry the little ones like booting mum its perfectly normal.Very good luck with your foal

on the side of the belly - around flank area...?
Have taken pictures and I will post on here but they have not shown how big she looks in the flesh but will post them in a mo...

My mare is due next month and I only saw the foal kicking for the first time on Friday.

I was pleased to read your comment Angrove about mare types as my mare has actually been looking pretty trim for a pregnant mare! I even had the vet check her twice before Christmas because I've seen her fatter on a naughty grass binge. She's only really started showing in the last month!
