My new (ish) mare's seasons are always like clockwork, but she seems to be in season every couple of days, for the last week or two. It seems to change daily. Is that because shes having her last season of the year ?
Also she has a bit of a hard time when she's in season - its a thoroughly unpleasant time and no fun for either of us. The vet has said he is happy for her to have Regumate next year. But it seems the cons outweigh the pro's. Ive spent an eyewatering amount of money this year on supplements, with a little success, but not really enough success to warrant the expense. So seriously considering Regumate next year. Just not sure. Id be interested to hear how other mares have got on with Regumate

Regumate has been my best friend! My mare was horrid from Late September to late October last year. Spoke to the vet who said it's because she was going through the last of her cycling for the year, so they recommended regumate for the first cycle and last of the year to help her along in the process as the hormones can apparently be a bit all over the place at those times of year. It really helped us when coming into the spring this year and will put her back onto it soon, just for a 10 day sprint. My sister's mare, when in full work, has to be on it 24/7 - I can't remember the exact reasons why, but has something to do with her eggs and the ovaries which meant when she was ridden it was very uncomfortable. However, when on regumate she is a very different horse and will let you put your leg on without having a tantrum about it. Hope that helps!

Ah thats a great help, thank you. So yours was still in season in October ? Oh dear. I was hoping i was nearing the end of it all for this year - few more weeks to push then, and then Regumate for next year I think

It's normally October mine has her last cycle & in the past it's been a time when she's most hormonal however this year she hasn't been quite so 'obviously' in season so I suspect her pattern is beginning to settle a bit as she has matured (aged 19) :)
I know people who have had good experiences with regulate.

Regumate is an excellent drug. I haven't used it for behaviour problems but it WILL work because it stops mares coming into season. (And some mares come in season all year round!)

Sometimes it works TOO well - I had a mare on it to try and make her STAY pregnant. At 55 days after last cover I had her scanned again - to make sure I wasn't wasting money on the Regumate! She was carrying bloody twins - junior vet had missed them at 28 day scan! I took her off the Regumate and prayed. Sure enough, she lost one twin at about 60 days and I ended up with a very nice single foal.

Regumate is brilliant stuff. (Also pigumate is the exactly same but cheaper if you can get your hands on it, some vets won't let you have any as it's not officially for equines)
Definitely worth a go next year. I've seen mares completely chill out on it and it allows many to compete through the summer with no issues.

Try Agnus Castus powder. My mare was a pain all summer and in season for most of it. Tried Oestress with a little bit of success but a price tag to match, saw someone recommend Agnus Castus on here so got some through progressive earth on ebay and now you dont even know when she is in season. She has 1 scoop per day, she is 16.2 and if she gets a bad season like the last one of the summer I tend to up her to 2 scoops for a week or so and it helps loads.
A 900g pack is £12.95 I think and lasts me about 3 months.

Many thanks for all your responses - very interesting. Those who have suggested supplements - I have tried every single supplement available (and given it plenty of time to work) incl pure chaste berry. Whilst they have slightly taken the edge off her behaviour when in season, the results didn't justify the expense so I had may as well put my pennies into a product which is more likely to work. I'm tired of having to coordinate my plans with her cycle, so i think next year it'll be regumate

I put my mare on agnus castus in the spring as she was very hormonal. It took a good 8 weeks to fully work but from then onwards you would hardly know she was in season. Completely different horse. I have been so pleased I am gonna keep her on a lower dose all winter to keep things in order.

Regumate was going to cost me £70 every three weeks. There's no way I can afford that. I didn't do it in the end but my vet was willing to try off label use of progesterone injections. My horse is complex and I'm not sure if it was hormonal or due to other issues, so I'm waiting to see what's she's like next summer.
