Not sure in a large field... in the garden I would do from late summer to October (sorry) so they have time to start growing and can be fully established next spring. I don't know if there is a best time, but I wouldn't bother during winter once the grass has stopped growing.

Thanks. No I'm not planning on doing it now, just planning my field rotation though winter and the first half of Spring....

What I have gathered so far, from googling, is between April & October - fertilizing a couple/few weeks before, but I *think* there is something about not doing it during the main spring flush...?!

Oh, and I think early Autumn *can* be a good time to do it...

Some might say dont do it then, do it then but grass is grass, its grows with a good amount of rain.
Depending on how big the patches are then id say september or march/april, give the patches a good rake and chuck the seed on and give it another rake, if you can get hold of some ferti then give it a bit a week or 2 after. Doesnt matter if its too dry, grass is quite a sturdy seed so will take root in a dust bowl if need be, try and keep the horses off the paddock before its properly greened up.

I reseed my bad patches in my paddocks, Sept-Oct or Apr-May. but I find autumn best as the horses come off the summer paddocks and are stabled and turn out into 2 smaller paddocks for the winter. gives the summer ones time to rest and the new grass bed in so to speak and the winter ones reseed in the spring and that way I have grass for the 4 neds thats when they aren't churning it up.

Youcan reseed patches almost anytime the temperature is consistently above 6 degrees. Grass stops growing in temps under 6 degrees. Takes approx 21 days from putting the seed down til you see the new shoots, best to keep horses of it until quite well established (if you need to use that paddock tape off the new seed). a bit of ferty will force it on but dont give too much as it will kill off new growth if overdone, better a little a couple of weeks apart (when damp) than a big dose.
