QUESTION! Friends of mine have just got a Golden Retriever pup and it's only just coming up 7 weeks old. Is this not a bit too young to be taken away from mum/siblings?

Generally 8 weeks but have heard of the going at 6wks which personally I think just a tad to soon.
Shouldn't come to any harm from it though.

All of my pups (except 1) have been 6 weeks old and the pups from my bitch left at 7 weeks. They are easily ready to go onto new homes at this age as they will have been weaned at least a couple of weeks beforehand.

From what I understand it depends on the breed, but on average, it's 8wks. My girl came home with me at 6wks & 6days old (her being a slow maturing breed, I was told after I got her home that she shouldn't have been homed before 10wks, ideally). Too young IMO, but her breeder insisted on her leaving ASAP. She's never suffered any ill effects from it.

Don't know about the UK, but there are laws in many states over here banning the sale of pups younger than seven weeks.

We didn't plan it as such, but got our pup when she was fifteen-weeks-old. She was already crate-trained and had learnt excellent doggie manners from the seven adult dogs in the household.

I let my first litter go at 6wks but go for 8wks now. That said, my friend had a puppy out of my last litter and as she's only down the road and I see her regularly, I let her take her a week early.

We've brought pups home at 6wks before and not had any probs.

I train guide dog puppys, and unless they are ill, they all come at 6 weeks. They come with a little bit of blanket smelling witht heir mum which we then replace with something smelling of us and their fine, they have 3 days TLC and then we start training them
