A few weeks ago when I had the vet out to Hannah for her annual jabs I asked the vet to have a look at a scab which was not healing on Grace's eye... she took a picture of it and said she wanted to send it to Prof. Knottenbelt at Leahurst as she suspected it was a sarcoid

I have just had a phone call from the vet to say Prof. Knottenbelt is pretty sure that it is a sarcoid and if faxing through some treatment plans for Grace

Can this horse be anymore unlucky???

November she did a suspensory, December she had colic and now March she starts treatment on her sarcoid!

Agree with Weezy that should be all 3 things now

And if you plan on keeping her they arent a problem really as long as you get them treated properley and whilst they are small, always keep an eye out for more on her body.

Oh Becki, sorry to hear this! I think Oskar and Grace should get together and form the "unluckiest horse on the planet" club.

I'm sure the sarcoid will be fine.

Hugs.

She is not having the conventional cream... because it is right above her eye it is something different (ie. more expensive I am guessing!!!) It is not as aggressive as the Liverpool cream.

Halfstep... I completely agree. There are all these cliques on here, you and I should form the 'owner of the unluckiest horse on the planet clique'!

Oh poor you and Grace - just as you were hopefully getting back on track with her.

Can I join to - does having a horse with an annular ligament/SDFT injury on one hind leg and now a suspected suspensory ligament injury on the other hind leg and also a suspected stress fracture on her hind quarters qualify.....!!

I would say you qualify!

Thanks, I am just hoping this will not cause any issues to what we are doing at the moment. Then again, after tomorrow's scan she could be back on box rest anyway

I seriously wonder why I ever bought this horse!!! When she was just on loan we had nothing to contend with, and since we bought her on 20th March it all went wrong

Then again, she is such a stunning girl that I couldn't imagine life without her!

Perhaps it would be worth getting a costing from them and then speaking to the Willesley Equine Clinic (Chris Shephard), they do their own treatment for some sarcoids, I had one done a couple of years ago on my gelding and it cost me pennies, they do one treatment and you leave it and you wait and wait and wait and just when you think that it hasn't worked, it falls out and heals up.

Good Luck, I hope things turn brighter for you soon.

Do you know what type of treatment it is?

How is it different to the treatment at Leahurst?

She will be going down to my regular vets for the treatment once the plan all comes through to try and save some money on call out!

Just think of her sarcoid as a beauty spot! Trooper had one above his eye which sounds just like Graces' his was treated and never returned he is now 21!

Thanks Worried1 - I am so glad you have told me your experience!!!

The vets are quite positive she will have hair regrowth on it, whereas at the moment it is bald and spoils her pretty face

And here was me hoping you were just literally talking about recent rain!

Anyway, if that is of any reassurance I rode quite a few horses with sarcoids, nones performance was affected.
My own horse had a sarcoid in the girth area since when he was 3 years old. Absolutely nothing happened with it until he was 6, then it got slightly irritated by the girth and so treated by a vet. He was ridden bareback only for about 6 months while his sarcoid got treated (it was a size of a nail and a little protruding) and his performance never suffered although of course we didn't compete. It was 10 years ago so I don't remember what was used for treatment.

Then I had a ride on a horse with a large sarcoid on the inside of his back leg. It was advised not to treat it and the horse never had any problems with it (had known him for over 6 years).

In the end of last year I also had a ride on a WB mare with 4-5 sarcoids (very flat, scabby ones) in various places on her body (chest, face, legs, belly). She was a recent import in a poor condition. Most of them disappeared after 3 months of her being on a balanced diet, well planned training and excellent care. It was suggested that although sarcoids are a bit of an unknown quality, the weak immune system (can be due to transport, injuries, operations, box rest etc among various other elements) might have allowed for their growth.
Again, she was never affected as far as her performance was concerned.

Hope Grace's sarcoid responds to treatment and you will finally have some peace of mind!!

Thank you... It has just been the final nail in the coffin for my attempt at staying positive. I think knowing we have tomorrow coming doesn't help either!

Its people like you who keep insurance costs up for the rest of us you know!!!!

Seriously though - I can't believe how much bad luck you and Grace have had this year, but am really keeping fingers crossed that that is your "three things" and when you look back on this in a years time it will be from the perspective of having her sound, happy and competing again.

BTW - Our grey mare has had a supposed sarcoid removed from her stifle but it hasn't recurred after six months, so looking hopeful I think.

Is Grace's scan tomorrow??? Best of luck!

Fiona

Yes it is tomorrow morning... thanks Fiona

I am not sure whether to claim for this sarcoid, I have claimed for so much already. Before November 2007 I had never made one claim in 6 years of having a policy!

I think you should go ahead and claim - if there is no more money left in the pot they will soon tell you.

The way I see it is that you are making up for peeps like me, who if something does go wrong with the horse, invariably it is something that isn't covered or is not enough to claim for!

Lots and lots of luck for tomorrow.

I hope to be reading a post tomorrow night about the lovely trotwork she has given you!!

can i start a club for unluckiest owner as well? my last horse had PSD within 6mths of me buying him, then annular ligament disease in both hindlegs a few years later. he had the surgery, came sound and then had to be one of the tiny percentage who go lame again. now i have bought a new horse, had him a week, and what do i discover but a sarcoid which appears to have been missed on the expensive 5stage vetting. i've already e-mailed a photo to derek knottenbelt who confirms sarcoid and that it would have been present more than a week. i'm now considering whether to take any action against the vets who vetted him for me. he wont be covered by my insurance as it's accidental injury only for the 1st 14days. i am not a happy bunny
frown.gif

Oh Star, what a nightmare!

This should have been picked up in the vetting! I would think about approaching the vet as like you have said you are not covered for this on your insurance now!

Join our club

Agree Becki, Star, that most definitely should have been picked up in the vetting and I would be looking for some sort of compensation from them. What a shame for you.

Becki - I also know a horse who had a sarcoid which was literally on the immediate area around the eye and it treated very succesfully with no recurrence.

Good luck for Grace's scans today.
