How do you find the time and energy to bother? I mean, if you are on diy and have to turn up early in the morning to turn out and in the evening to bring in. And if on your morning visit it is either frozen, but likely to thaw later, or heavy rain , and likely to clear later, and even if you are not at work for the day , do ypu find the energy for a third trip to the yard to ide if the only goood time to ride is late morning or very early afternoon that does not fit in with your visits to care for your horse?

I tend to go back up in the afternoon, ride and I leave him in with a more hay than i normally would or obviously depending on what time you normally go up in the morning but I feed, muck out while he's eating his breakfast and potter around the yard a bit so his breakfast can go down and then ride straight from the box then turnout. I tend to fit him round me to a certain extent.

This^^^

I know tend to bring in earlier and leave with more hay, normally around 4ish there are people up the yard till gone 8-9 every night, and mine is right outside the tea station so is always getting petted. My horse goes out every day for a few hours at least, normally has 8 or more and if nice over night then he will stay out. Some of the other liveries leave there's in for days on end, so I don't think he has it too bad.

when i'm not at work i will sometimes make the 3rd trip, as especially in the winter they may have been in all night so want to get out grazing not work and may be too cold/frozen, but as the day light draws in i will usually ride before their dinner. luckily i'm only 2 miles from the yard, although it is across the rail way so sometimes i'm unlucky and have to wait there for 20 minutes. i did go up at 11 yesterday, having turned them out at 6am, and was glad i did as the sun was out and had a nice hack except for chilly wind. but i often don't make the effort!

On non work days in winter, I'll do one of 2 things
1. Turn up, tack up & go out whatever the weather, then do chores on return
or
2.Either feed or Pop in small net while mucking out, doing most/all of the chores so am warm, then tack & go out.

Latter is what I do if tipping it down or bluddy cold as means I can virtually get into car & go home when I have ridden :)

Due to my work hours I usually do three trips to the yard anyway! Fortunately it's only 5 mins away.

First thing(between 6&7am) I'll go up and feed and turn out/bring in.
In my lunch break (3-4 hours long!) I poo pick, muck out, and exercise both.
After work (about 8pm) I go back down and bring in/turnout and skip out.

You do get into the routine, I promise!

On my none work days I have no probs going out 3 times but tbh I'd probably be hanging around the yard doing other jobs in the morning until the frost cleared

Yes though I'm totally hooked, and work weird hours so it's never massively late at night.

I have to say though, if we get snow, he's having a month's holiday. It was too much stress trying to keep him fit when we couldn't even walk to the arena...

I work all day 8-5 mon-fri so a 3rd trip is out the question unless I'm off work. We've just started winter routine and i either:

morning-Go up, ride, feed and turn out
evening-muck out, hay, water, bring in and feed

or vice versa depending on if I hit the snooze button!

Obviously I try to minimize trips but if the choice was go a third time or not ride then I would always do the third trip. Its never a chore for me.

Miss_c: I want your lunch breaks!

This too.

ride in the morning at 7am if I am on visits then work a bit later, breakfast her when i get back and turnout or if i have early visits or work then i ride later and sling out at 7am at weekends i normally get to yard by 07:30 and ride at 8am then sort out and trunout by 9. I make 20-25 mins in the school really count so we get good work, walk trot and canter.

My horse rarely has a day off.
So if I cant ride in the morning or evening I will make a third trip so I can ride.

I enjoy it and døbt see it at a chore.

Maybe you could do a deal with someone yo turn out or bring in their.horse in return for the same.
To save you a third trip some days.

It's only really December and January when the lack of daylight causes a problem for hacking out and the ménage is frozen or deep in snow.
On our yard horses go out at 7am and come in around 3.30-4pm. The school is heavily used at these times, so I tend to turn out, do jobs and bring them in from the field to ride and chuck out again afterwards.
It's time consuming but I feel they spend long enough standing in the stable so try to avoid making them stay in any longer than they have to.

Lol! It's one of the perks of being self employed, the downside is I do split shifts and work 8-12.30ish and then 4-8ish every day. I am fortunate that my morning shift is not too far from the yard and then in the evening I'm at home. Does mean plaiting VERY late on a night if I'm competing the next day though! Going up in my lunch break is also essential in winter as it means I get to see my horses in the daylight!

We'll now clocks change has happened riding in weekdays is no go due to work - meaning I visit early morning to turn out and muck out the stable they are free to go into during day, then later on mucking other stable then groom both, hard feed, haynets and maybe a few odd jobs. Weekends will now be filled with hacking so early morning turnout then muck both stables, go home and do some actual jobs (sigh! :( ) then visit around 11 to go for long hack, return, turn out for few hours then come back later for feeding and putting in. Stress! :D

Every weekday I go down early morning & rug, turnout & muckout. I come back down mid afternoon & bring in. I go down for a third time around 5pm when I meet my daughter who goes there straight from work & she rides then. I do this all through the year, the horses need the work so that's what I do.
