Always wondered but never got around to asking and am on the verge of getting a new horse to jump aff. When is it correct to salute to a showjumping judge? :)

Thanks
Lucy :)

In France you ride to the judge's box and salute - they won't ring the bell until you.
Or it used to be like that. Haven't been affiliated there for just over 20 years!!

Many years ago it was when you were required not to wear tweed, that was pretty much classes with £100 or more as a first prize, and in the days when everyone wore tweed. Now its rare that judges are saluted so you would probably have to be at a big championship show like HOYS or similar before it will happen which is a shame as it does show respect.

now adays is seems common for riders to nod instead of saluting, I usually nod when entering and leaving and also nod and put my hand up if I retire

I always salute before the start of the round...its in the rules here to do so as far as I know and a real bugbear of mine that it is not done more!

I starting jumping ponies in 1994 and was taught from day one to salute the judges. Even just a nod to the box if u can't take a hand off the reins. I jump now in my army uniform and the judges get a full on military salute! I just see it as good manners really

We were only discussing this at a recent SJ competition, very few riders saluted the judge - I believe it is not required these days as it slows the class down considerably. We all decided it was nice to be saluted. Otherwise you sit there all day being totally ignored!

One good thing about it is that if the gate steward has been slow in letting you know who is in the ring at least if they come and salute you you can ask them who they are!

That sounds really smart! Good for you
