I took my 21 year old ex-racer to the vet today. He had abcess type symptoms about 4 weeks ago, but nothing came out, apart from a bruise on the sole, yet still had fetlock and pastern swelling. So I took him back to the vet today for some further investigation. Now he was heavily raced. He broke down and both superficial flexor tendons are seriously bowed. He has also had a fractured radius at the age of 17 which became infected and we thought we would lose him. Anyway, I took him to the vet today and she did some x-rays from the fetlock downwards, doing the whole joint, and down to and including the pedal bone. Both the vet and myself were staggered. Despite his very hard life racing (National Hunt) and all the other injuries, there was absolutely NO arthritis/ringbone/sidebone. He even trotted up sound when flexion tests were done....
Verdict - arsing around in the field - trod on stone and twisted fetlock.
Is it possible that joint supplements actually do work? I've had him on one for the last four years, although I always have my doubts that they work, but this has made me consider it differently.....I am still amazed....

I think thats really fantastic considering what he's done in his life, I do think some of these supplements work it's choosing the right one, we have a 18 yr old cob mare on our yard and she has Arthritis in her pelvic region, her owner tried a lot of supplements and has recently hit on the rights ones, being Cortaflex along with Alphabute, she does get stiff some days but the change in her is amazing, she acts like a 3 yr old and winds the other horses up now.

Wow that is amazing - congratulations! How many years did he race/in training??

Oh, and what supplement do you use - I use Cortaflex HA - costs a fortune but I have been told/read/googled/forumed that it is the best.....??

Hmmm could be, was going to say perhaps back in his racing days, who ever ran him really looked after his legs (fitness/ground wise etc) or perhaps due to his conformation, it's not taken it's toll on that area despite his other type of induries.

He raced over sticks from the age of four to ten, mainly doing 2m5f to 3m2f then finished off doing some point to points and it was in his final point to point approaching the finishing line that he broke down. I have him on Aviform Suppleaze Gold. I did try a couple of others beforehand, but they didn't seem to make any difference and when I looked at the different levels of ingredients in the products, it's amazing how low some of them are in the other products. I never tried Cortaflex, although I think it's pretty similar in levels of ingredients to the Suppleaze Gold...

Haha.....his confirmation is awful. He's got a really long body with a neck the length of a giraffe. Although he's got plenty of bone - he really looks more like a TBxID, he really doesn't look like a pure TB!
