So I am thinking about getting either the cavallo simple or sport hoof boots for when my boys shoes come off next week. Do I wait to until his shoes are off to measure him or can I measure his feet with the shoes on.

He is shod with heartbars.

The recommendation is always to measure just after a trim, although the cavallo's are quite forgiving on the sizing.

If you are expecting him to be foot sore, its probably worth having a pair ready to wear.

Phone up and speak to the really helpful lady at Hoofbootique :) Also helpful people at Cannock Chase Equine, and at the Saddlery Shop. All of those specialise in hoof boots and can advise on how to estimate size while shoes still on :)

Ideally, if you can work out size, buy a secondhand pair off eBay to get you going, as feet may change size after a short while out of shoes and that's when to buy the brand new pair :)

I'd wait til the shoes are off and try to get some second hand from eBay. Bear in mind the first couple of types of boots you try probably won't be what you settle on.

I started with simples (paid 45 from eBay brand new in box "2nd hand"). Wore them a few times (she doesn't need boots often) and they rubbed on fast long hacks so I sold them on preloved (no listing fees :D) for 55 :D:D.

Now she is in easyboot epics (bought in a sale) but again she rarely needs them. It's nice to have them in case I do feel the need but I wouldn't rush out to buy them til you see how he does.

Good luck. 8 months in just completed our third 24km endurance ride barefoot :D
