When to call it a day ?

Posted on here a lot re my tb long story but short had investigations ect would ideally be a surgical
Candidate but I do not want him having sx as nearly 19 , my dialemea is at the min he is dropping weight quickly despite being on 3x feeds a day plus haylage he has rec had bloods just showed high liver but post colic so unsure how sig this is, vets out last week discussed grass nuts , he is well in himself and enjoying his work but I am concerned with the amount of weight loss and dodnt know if it's fair to put him through a another winter ? What do u all think ? X

When you feel it's right, I've had a quick look at a previous post of yours and is it ulcers causing bother?

If you can honestly say hand on heart you've done all you can, and I fully support no surgery btw I wouldnt either, then pts is fair for both of you.

How much work is he doing? Is it worth reducing work to just hacking out 3-4 times a week & more time out in the field with ad-lib hay?

If no improvement in 4 weeks then maybe PTS best option.

I feel for you. Good luck whatever you decide.

Just re-read post. I thought that haylage was too acidic for most horses with ulcers? Might he do better on hay? You could steam or soak if coughing problems.

Hi sorry for late replies , he has been checked for ulcers at vets all clear , re haylage he has been tried on hay didn't do well on that is better on haylage , re his work he gets schooled , hacked and lunged but do take
It week by week he as to
Wheather he can cope , we have tried giving him time off
But he got fed up and depressed he seems
Happier when doing something even if it just hacking out , thank

You say high Liver,so I take it his liver is slowly packing up,I'd take it day by day,plenty of high fibre(I use Winergy low energy)keeps the weight on also not full of energy when hacking. Try Horsehage my lot were on it last year as we had no hay and all 5 did very well from a 17year old-16 months,and it wasn't much more expensive than the low quality hay they were selling round here.And only you can say when to call it a day, nobody else and you will know believe me.
