You will all think I am mad but its the first time I have had so much choice on turnout.
My chap is in by day out at night as he was somewhat chubby when I got him. He is a really nice chap and this works well for both of us and his weight is nice. His shared paddock still has short grazing in plenty so.....

My brain says go to 24/7 and then when they need to be in at night it won't be a major changeover.

So when should I start leaving him out 24/7?

I am going away in a couple of weeks but think I should switch before then but don't want him getting fat? The grass still seems rich to me.

It is usually a balance between thank god the flies are going and sun not so scorching so they can go out and that the grass gets richer in September and October. Without seeing how his weight is and the state of the grass it is hard to say. It is harder as you will be away and not there to monitor waistline. If you are more worried about weight then stick with your present routine.

Ours stay out at night until the 1st Nov unless it gets silly weather (last year they came in a couple of weeks before as it was non stop rain and the fields were getting boggy - one gets bad mudrash). They are both good doers . There is still lots of grass and its so mild anyway.

ps. they change over without fuss anyway if they are pretty laid back horses - ours have been to my friend's full livery yard twice this summer when we have been away, where they were in by night, whereas at home they are out at night. They really don't seem to care as long as they have something to eat!

Likewise, ours stay out at night and chnge to in at night when the weather and/or ground conditions dictate...they accept the changeover very easily. Last year it was in for a few nights early November (firework season) then out again until early December...a luxury year!
