Hey guys

Bought our new house with just over 2 acres of land back in November last year. The paddock was in such a state we had to have it ploughed etc and resown. I understand that I won't be able to put my horses on it for 1-2 years so that it gets a chance to establish a good enough root system to withstand horse.

There are various areas that have thistles, nettles and buttercups coming through. What's my best way to deal with them?

Also when will we be able to give it its first cut? We're planning on using the ride on lawn mower without the grass catcher bit attached and put it on the setting that makes the cuttings really fine and sprays them out over a large area. What are the signs that it's ready to be cut?

Cheers

My dad used a spray that kills all the weeds but not the grass. Left it for two weeks to work then topped the field. It's come back only 6 weeks later looking gorgeous, hardly any docks, thistles & nettles.

I'm going there tonight so I'll ask what stuff it is :)

Your best bet is to cut and collect ithe grass several times during the Summer months as this will densen up the grass and help to establish the root structure. As regards thistles and nettles you can either spray them or strim them say once a fortnight. They do not like being strimmed and give up the ghost? Also roll the grass.

Thanks for you help OWLIE185. That sounds like a good plan.

Gracie21 that would be great if you could get the name of the stuff your dad used. Did he spot spray the weeds with it (i.e being careful to only get it right down in the base of each plant) or just spray all over the affected areas?
