when are people going to geld there foals?

trying decide whether to geld next month or leave till after christmas.
he is 6 months next month not intending to fully wean yet, as still need the gelding for the children to ride and will start to ride mum while children not riding and gelding in the field
hope this makes sense

When they become a nuisance and their balls drop. Some people do it before weaning or wait for cooler weather.

The only time I don't cut colts is during the winter, in the summer they can cope with the flies etc, but it is really not on to have an open wound when it's -15C. I have a three month old colt that we joked should have been done the day he was born (Vet says that he has heard they do that in some places) he arrived in a bolshy mood and hasn't improved at all. Fortunately he's only a diddy little arab (rather than a stonking great chap) the others don't take any of his nonsense so he'll be done in Spring when it warms up a bit.

ill be getting my colt done nxt month all being well

Yep we have two being done in a couple of weeks once there tetanus jabs are up to date before they go to there new homes bith born middle of May

I had mine done at 18 months, would have been at 12 moths but only one had dropped and he was never bolshy. I had him done in September so he was over the worst of the flies and still had time to put weight back on before winter if it pulled him down. He was fine. I had him standing cut in his table. He stayed in for 24 hours then was turned out with my old boy. He had no bleeding no swelling and no infection. In fact on day 1 evening he was busy scratching an ear with his hind leg so clearly not overly bothered about the whole thing!

We were planning to geld ours (he's now 5 months old) as he was born with both a stonking great pair, and an attitude to match!! Unfortunately I've obviously talked within his earshot about the Big Chop, as having a check yesterday I discovered that they have entirely disappeared!!! Oh dear .... we were so looking forward to a change in attitude .....

been to see the vet today and they have said they will not geld until feb, so will wait till then. will just have to feed mum more till then as he is starting to drain her a bit now.

i had my foal done at just over 4mths vet was happy to do it and i wanted him done while on mum as its less of a drama for him. All went well was a total text book 'snip' poor little love.

they are so little and we chop bits of then steal their mums such evil folk we are!!

I had a 16 month old colt gelded this week with no problems. I like to have them done just before weaning if possible or failing that as early in the spring when they are yearlings. unfortunately this little lad kept one testicle hidden and after a summer of examining him we were finally able to do him. Luckily I had a field on its own and a young gelding to turn out with him but I was not looking forward to keeping him entire over the winter.
