Hi, i just wanted a bit of advise / opinions. I rescued to dartmoor colt in about may last year. They were herded off the moors at 4 months old, pushed from piller to post for the next 7 months and came to me thin, infestited with lice and with long dull coats and dred locks everywhere! They are doing brill now but just wanted some advise in the best time to geld? It needs to be sooner rather than later as they are about 20 months now and, prob because there are two of them, they are getting very naughty! Have always owned geldings but have always been already done. I didn't want to do it too early but was think about the end of march before the flies start? Also does anyone have any tips to make things go as smoothly as poss?

Will prob be fertile now so asap before the flies get around.

Mine boy was done at 4 months on the vets recommendation (he was horrid). He is now a strapping 8 year old, well grown and bigger than his mum and dad.

You are right on about the flies and the more he can move around freely, the better. If it is too soon to turn out and you want to get it done before he accidentally breeds somebody's mare, plan on doing a lot of walking him for a couple of days. FWIW, my fella was fine (bright eyed and his own silly self) within 24 hours. Good Luck!

Thanks, just confirmed what i thought really. They are not stabled (dartmoors off the moors don't equal stables!!!!) Even my section d won't entertain the idea, he completely flips!!
But anyway, will prob get them done around march as our winters are going on for longer. Mares aren't a prob, only got my three boys, although they quite like trying to mount my sec d, just like winding him up! He soon puts them straight.
