My Welsh D is working well in walk, fairly OK in trot but falls in quite a bit in canter, so we only do short sharp bursts as his balance isn't established in the pace yet.

At what point do you introduce shoulder in and leg yield - do you do this when the paces are established or to help them? We've spent about 8 months teaching him to move away from the leg and he is improving if slowly - we had no impulsion whatsoever 6 months ago!!

i would wait untill you have 3 established paces, you could do leg yield in walk. do it from the ground using your hand first, when you apply pressure and he moves away from it release the pressure then apply that when ridden.
