My mare was AI's on 27th May - she had a tear drop shaped follicle at the time, so think it is likely she ovulated within 24 hours.

I took her back in for a scan yesterday, and the vet said it was possibly a bit early to tell (so why have me make the appt?!), but that I should take her back tomorrow morning. Is that really going to be enough time to make a difference?

I have to take holiday to take her in, so was going to propose I take her next Weds instead - presumably she'll be getting closer to ovulating again if not pregnant, but will be easier to confirm either way? Or is that leaving it too late?

Just to further complicate things, she had an allergic reaction to something the weekend after she was inseminated, so the vets don't think it's likely she will have taken, but her temperament is much more mellow (as she is usually whilst pregnant), so I'm not sure. They are proposing to give her prostagladin again at the weekend, but I don't know whether it's better to let her come in again naturally if she's not pregnant?

Thoughts appreciated please!

Thanks

Inseminate - scan to check for ovulation. Scan 15 days or so later to check if in foal and again at around 40 days for heartbeat.

Is your vet an AI specialist??

I think that is a bit early, I'd be rechecking her on Friday or even Saturday ascould only be 14 days or less.

If she wasn't scanned to see exactly when she ovulated, as opposed to when they thought she would, you may be looking for a lot younger pregnancy than you realise, if that makes sense?

i do 16-18 days then 28 days then my vet likes to do around 40 days to make sure all going ok

Perfect description of what happens. But we don't do the 40 day.

Was she given Chorulon at - or the day before - AI to make her ovulate? What size was the follicle? Was she scanned the day after AI to check if she HAD ovulated?

If not, it's somewhat guesswork but if AI'd on 27th, if she didn't ovulate by 29th then unlikely she's pregnant. IF she ovulated on 29th, she'd have been 12 days yesterday which is borderline - tomorrow would make it 14 days and should be definitive (if vet has specs on!) Next Wednesday would be 19 days, which is too late for effective twin reduction.

Unless you're 100% confident your vet can spot a 14 day pregancy with 100% accuracy, I wouldn't PG tomorrow. I'd rescan next Tuesday when she should be coming back in if I didn't have a stallion to do the job!

Thanks for all the help. She was rescanned this morning, and def not pregnant.

I think with her being quite ill as well it would have been nothing short of a miracle!

I think I'll make sure they rescan after AI date to confirm the date of ovulation next time, as it will cut down on the guesswork a bit.

Keeping fingers crossed for next attempt

That's a shame but as I said, same as Janet George, really you need to know when they ovulated, which also confirms that they actually DID ovulate. This second scan also means that you know if there is any fluid there that needs removing with a washout or drugs.

Good luck.
