When to scope?

Brief history;

horse has ulcers (grade 2), been scoped in feb (Twice), and again in april (mid) shes currently on GG daily 1/2 a tube and as you can imagine my insurance is quickily running out...

i was going to re-scope end of May (approx 7 weeks after last scope), however im thinking about booking her in sooner (in a week), purely as my moneys running out and she will have had 4 weeks on GG and just chilling out in the field with the occasional run round the lunge pen (her choice as it turned evil doing nothing..)

(shes going on another supplement similar ;) to GG after the next scope and re-scoping again in another month when i bring her back into ridden work!

(following still?)

Do i scope in a week? or wait until end of may? (end of may is so she has a good dose of GG and i get my uni finals out of the way)! If i scope now I may have some money left over in case I need more GG....

or do i just put it on horsemart and buy a new car? (jokes...)

thoughts pls??

p.s vets left it upto me to decide when to scope (great vets :) )
 
My vet advised not to even bother rescoping my horse after 4 weeks on GG. He had grade 2 ulcers (1 in the pyloric region). They said GG for a month - adlib forage - forage feed and turned out 24/7 and to ensure regime was maintained after GG.
 
:rolleyes: just had a thought - it could of course be that my horse was such a bad ass in the stable (danger signs hung up everywhere warning the grooms! :eek:)that the vet didn't want him back again :( although he was good to scope :D
 
thanks - but as shes insured (they were severe in feb) i wantedto make sure they are going....

she is a drama queen.... so im tempted to bring her back into work next week and re-scope the following week

ive no idea how long it takes for ulcers to return?!! they shouldnt as shes on GG.. tbh.



ets - lol....... probably because they sedate them for scoping :D :D :D lol! he was behaved then?! :D
 
Yes , he's insured too. Grade 2 are not bad ulcers btw unless they were worse to start with?
My horse was so nasty the vet expected as a minimum to find Grade 4s if not bleeding ulcers. In fairness to him he had another serious pain issue that likely caused the ulcers.
 
no they were more serious back in feb when it alll kicked off

she had the worst some specialist had seen.... cant say any higher grade as i dont know but i think it was where they were and the shape?? they were.... they were bad anyhow!

How does yours cope with pain/signs??? what does he show when/if?? they flair up?

Mine was really girthy and got very temperamental when you so much as put a rug on him before any straps were done up. I did a test with Rantacidine and he improved, so then had him scoped.
He's not the best example because he was highly aggressive (biting, striking, rearing, kicking - not nice :( and finally bucked over his ears 4 times with my daughter in a 20 min lessoin - she had whiplash type injuries))and this didn't subside - that and the fact the ulcers were low grade made me quickly realise that these were only symptomatic of a more serious problem. I then did a pain trial with Danilon and he showed some improvement. Got him referred to AHT - Sue Dyson and he has chron sacro illiac dysfunction ofr which he now has LOU.
His temperament is lovely now - he doesn't attack me anymore yay!

He went to a holistic vet for his sacrum to be mobilised and she immediately said she could see he had a huindgut imbalance from his reactiveness. She said this was caused by the GG treatment, allowing undigested food through the hindgut. This kills off the hindgut fauna which is worrying . She said to give him Green Clay (consumption grade) - 20ml a day for 2 weeks then a 2 week break (very important break) the 20ml a day for 2 weeks again. All the while giving him 10ml of Chlorella a day too. This regime restores the hindgut fauna (all available on ebay cheaply).
He lives out now 24/7 unrugged and on ablib forage and a cereal and sugar free diet + a cup fiull of micronised linseed. We want to try and bring him into work once the weather warms up.

Thats interesting.

Shes on GG (has been for 3?) weeks....will be 4ish when i take her back to leahurst....long term she's on a similar one (if you get my drift)
...

but i do wonder the effect on her long term/gut??

I want her re-scoped before my insurance runs out, and then once yearly i will have to pay for it, (think its approx £300?)


Are there supplements you have found when giving GG, help further?

She has to be on GG as its what helps her - she still hates me doing her rugs up on front (she bites - always has ) and i think its more ot less a habit now!
 
Ah your poor mare - sounds like she needs the acid reduced to stop flare ups. Do you feed before you ride? I was advised to always do that too. Never to feed cereal or sugar. I give my boy a maximum of 3 small carrots a day, no haylage or licks and carob (locust bean) that#s the nearest he gets to sweet without the sugar.

Next winter I am going back to Simple system feeds for all of mine and will add the carob to sweeten it. I will still feed the WB the micronised linseed. I did also feed him yeasacc in the early days, not now though. The more natural you can the better. I did use that UlcerGard for a while that has mallow and liquorice which are good ffor the gut. I feed all of mine mag oxide, but that's precautionary for a lacking and as a laminitis saver.

If I were you I would be feeding Aloe Vera juice everyday too. Take a look at this very informative blog about ulcers, there are some good supplements suggestions on there:

shes on gastro - eats hay chop and simple systems feeds :)

no carrots/apples etc - NO sugar at all.

She has access to hay 24/7 and grass (goes out) 9ish hours a day which is plenty

i rotate my fields so she always has grass nibbles :) (not massivly long as she gets fat)


so im dfoing everything i can except 24/7 turnout which isnt do-able at the moment...mabey in the future :)

I think i will get her scoped in a week or so as im riding her again next week :)

It is not possible to diagnose hindgut imbalance due to reactiveness. There is also no evidence that gastrogard/omeprazole has any detrimental effect on the hindgut - in fact it is often used therapeutically in the management of colitis.
