Hi everyone

I'm not sure exactly where to post this but figured those viewing the Breeding forum would have some experience of this.

We're looking at buying a new horse - 5 year old stallion - but we plan to have him gelded (a crime I know!)

I've had a good look around but can't find any reliable information on my following concerns, and just hope you could let me know of your experiences with this:

* How long until he can be turned out with other geldings (I'm worried that at 5 he'll take a bit longer to lose his stallion tendencies)

* Obviously he'll be kept away from mares for 4-6 months, but being a shared livery yard, how do you think people will feel about this (of course I'm going to ask them the question too but just curious what you all think...)

* Is it best he's kept in a paddock alone for a while to ensure he doesn't injure himself?

Any other tips also appreciated... thank you!

D

Thank you - we have all the time in the world, but just want to make sure we're doing the right thing.

He will be gelded at his current home and the first week or so will be spent there so he doesn't have a sudden change of surroundings too - we'll give him longer if needs be.

Having spoken to the livery yard, they have a separate field that we can use with high fencing so that shouldn't be a problem when we move him there, although for his sake I'd like him to be with other horses asap...

we have just had ours done

we are 3 weeks on, we kept him in for the first week, but he was walked every day. the main reason for this was because he has not been out since october so we thought he would go abit mad, but he did not.

he was put out into i field on his own and had settled very well, the other horses around are not fussed by him at all. we have to walk him through there field each night.

he has calmed down so much no biting any more or anything.
on tuesday next week he will go into the other field with the other horses.
the vet has advised as that he can be mixed with mares at 6 weeks although he wont be.
we did not have him done at the yard he went into to vets to be gelded, i personal think this was the best thing we did as we have no blood loss at all, it cost alittle more it was 350 but worth i feel.
we are on livery as well and it was kept very hush hush as people tend to get funny about things.
good luck

Yea, I didn't plan to shout about it - the sad thing is if they did know, any kicking or biting would be put down to it, although how many geldings who've been done for years don't do that now and again!?

Thanks for the advice - and yes, will certainly look at having it done at the vets. £350 isn't too bad really - it's gonna cost £200 or so on site so not a huge difference and extra peace of mind...

Again, will keep him walking a lot - this is meant to be good for healing and to reduce swelling too.

Good luck with yours bugbee - how old is he?

Last year I gelded a 7 year old stallion, who had been covering since he was young, both inhand & running with mares. He was extremely stallion like at the time of gelding.

He was first turned out with a gelding just four weeks later. After a few tense moments (for me!), they sorted things out, and all was fine. He has lived with that gelding ever since, and all is well, they are happy together, and don't like to be parted now! He hasn't been put with mares, we rehomed him since, and his new owners are aware he was a stallion, and are aware this could be a problem should they ever wish to try it.

A 4 yr old stallion has just been cut on our yard. He has been done about 4 weeks now.

He never covered, and had a little gelding friend. Now he is living out, alone at the moment, but given another month or two will hopefully be introduced to geldings etc.

Thanks everyone - based on what's been said, 4-6 weeks seems an average time before things start returning to normal, which is fine.

How long did you leave it before riding/lunging?

Thanks
Darren
