My lovely five month old jrt Humbug is still suffering. I have posted previously about his problems - initially it was a suspected fractured skull, they then x ray and further tests revealed a large abcess above his left eye. This was operated on under general then had to be further sedated a few days later to reopened the wound when it refilled. He had been on anti biotics and metacan for a week after surgery and all seemed well.

Yesterday I felt something wasn't right - he was again shying away from the hand when you went to stroke him and eye seemed a tiny bit bulbous so took him back to vets. Vet now thinks he may have a deep seated abcess behind the eye. She believes this could have tracked up last time causing the higher abcess. Anyway he is again on anti biotics, metacam and eye drops. Outwardly if you looked at him you would not notice anything wrong, he is full of energy and fun and eats well. He is just very sensitive around the eye.

Vet has suggested if this does not settle by weekend he is to be referred to animals health tryst in Newmarket for MRI scan. Does anyone have any experience or idea of cost for scans? I am aware I am now potentially looking at thousands rather than hundreds. He is insured but was only for a thousand a year and we are at five hundred already.

He will have whatever he needs without a seconds doubt but would be useful to know if anyone else has been through this what it cost.

Feel so bad for my gorgeous little boy. Apologies for the ridiculously long post just feeling very sad :-(

I had been wondering how your little Humbug was getting on...........:( So, so sorry to hear he's not out of the woods yet.

Sorry, I've go no idea about costs - I'm in mainland Europe. But I really, really hope the AHT can sort him out for you, and that the costs are not to horrific.

More <<<<<vibes>>>>> for the little man.

Sorry to hear about poor Humbug!

I'm afraid MRI scans are expensive - fairly specialised equipment and the need for a general anaesthetic make it quite costly. I'd say for GA and MRI average price would be in the region of £1000.

Ultrasound is less expensive and can give reasonable detail in the hands of someone skilled at scanning so this might be another option.

Thanks Karen, appreciate that. To be honest it's got to the stage now that I just want to know what's wrong and get it sorted. He seems slightly better on the current medication but I feel it's just masking the symptoms and I'll soon be back to square one. At least with the scan I will hopefully have a definate diagnosis. I guess a thousand pounds isn't much to pay for the love and loyalty the little fella shows us.

And of course it's always good to show my support for the credit card companies in these difficult times ;-)

Poor Humbug, I hope the AHT manage to find the cause . If I remember rightly I was given a rough quote of £800 for Buffy to have an MRI, but in her case I declined because it wasn't going to help her just maybe give us a reason for her sight problems. Had they been able to treat her I would have been there like a shot and boosting the credit card company's coffers also. Fingers crossed he is soon back to normal.

Poor Humbug!! Sounds painful! Not sure on costs but I wonder if it might be worth calling the Royal Cambridge Vet School as they have a fabulous dog clinic and a lot of the time the prices for MRI/Operations are cheaper than the Newmarket based ones. Good luck xx

Hi,

I had my jack russell referred to AHT a couple of years ago when our own vets were unable to determine cause for unsteadiness/ paralysis that came on very suddenly.

He had spinal tap, MRI and other investigations, and was there a week for observation and recovery. Total cost for this was about £2700, and like you I was only insured up to £1000.

Unfortunately once they have them in and start investigating, the cost can rack up very quickly!

They do take very good care of their patients, albeit at a high cost. I hope you get the answers you need x

Hope things go well. My little dog Jack (ESS) spent three days last week in the Royal Veterinary College, North Mimms. The cost £2,450 . Interesting that the same blood test done by my own vet (which included sending it away) was £20 less. Over night say at the
college was £33 each night.

My little chap has to go back when more tests will be done. !! more money, just as well he is insured.
