When you ride somewhere new!

Boxed Fly to neighbouring village for 8 mile hack home. Oh my, he was forward going, over tracking by 3 - 4 inches and such a pleasure to ride. WHAT A DIFFERENCE to his normal, bored, self! Might take him hunting next sat, but worried about trashing him (cantering on roads) and flat out on boggy ground. (thats the reason I DO NOT HUNT). Why do people that hunt dis-regard their horses welfare so much?xx p.s. genuine enquiry, not meaning to be confrontrational.

Oh yeah, I suppose it is. Sorry, didn't mean that. It's just that a couple of friends of mine are mad on hunting and do so twice a week. They admit that they see all sorts, cantering on roads, and horses boxed home in full tack after 5 hrs hunting. Perhaps it's me, and I'm just too soft.x

When ever i took mickey somewhere new on "his own" he was very spooky and sometimes naughty.
If he went somewhere new with another horse/pony, he loved it! But usually he prefered going out oon hacks where he knew of because he wasnt frightened and very confident!
 
I have cantered on a road once out hunting and it was definitely preferrable to the mad trot I was having to try to keep up. Loads of people trot for miles on roads and I always thought that was much more percussive on theirlegs

You dont have to canter on roads. You can go slow through boggy ground.
You may choose to leave your horse's saddle on to keep the back warm on the journey home.

I think you're right. I'm sure a fast trot (and I'm sure I've read it somewhere!) is more damaging than a controlled canter. I've also read (wish I could remember where!) That trotting is actually harder work than cantering.

as for hunting i have never been due the the state my old YO horse cmae back in all the time she even took one out when it was still lame ... result= horse will never be ridden again completely broken

I think its down to the individual
 
My horse is megga forward going when taken somewhere new...takes a while to settle but always on his toes and you just have to let him get on with it and ride him strongly forward or he gets his knickers in a twist! But yes, he is a different horse to when at home!
 
My girl is a little insecure so when we go somewhere new she's quite tense so she needs riding forward so that she doesn't back off or turn round.
