Getting very frustrated. Can't find my big gentle giant hw anywhere. Everything I see either has no brakes, bucks for Britain or is dead to the leg. :(

I have now had my new boy for nearly 3 months. He is full ID and it took me a over a year to find him.....I ended up getting a just backed rising 4 year old when I was really looking for something 6-8 years old. It eventually dawned on me that what I was looking for rarely comes onto the market as people do not want to part with them - unless you have a serious amount of money to spend (which I didnt!!!:D).

What are you looking for?

Yep, I think you're right, might have to do what you have done. I was thinking of giving JG a ring, actually.

My ideal would be 16.2/16.3 hh weightcarrier with plenty of bone and a muscular neck, safe for beach riding and a bit of cross country playing, nothing serious or competitive, hacks alone, forward going but with brakes, good doer, good feet, mostly could winter out with rugs, gentle and loving, not head shy, no cracked heels or sweet itch, safe to lead, load and tie -oh and a gelding!!!! In other words, hens teeth - lol

I don't think it exists:D:D:D

You are def looking for hen’s teeth!!!!!

If I hadn't found my boy JG was going to be my next step! Good quality, well mannered, correctly educated ID's that have been there and done a bit of everything do not come up often and from my experience the ones that are advertised under the £5K mark do not pass a 5 stage vetting (had 4 fails!!) or have some quirk. Even though my boy is only a baby he has really settled in well, and is taking to yard life like a duck to water and has already been to a couple of parties and has taken it all in his stride. Yes he is green but he is not sharp in any way so I can easily deal with him when we encounter something new and scary and the best thing is that no one has screwed him up...... and to ensure that I don’t screw him up I have him on a fab yard with a very experienced yard owner on hand to help should we encounter any problems.:D

Have to say I am totally smitten with my new boy and there is no way he will ever be sold. The only down side is that ID's do take a long while to mature physically so I am not planning on doing too much with him other than give him a broad allround education over the next few years.

Good luck with your search.:)

PS Glad you know about the dealer.....as I said from my experience there is always a reason why they are cheap:rolleyes:

Perhaps Cumbria Heavy Horses could advise you where to look?

There is also a dealer I can recommend, but they're in Lancashire.

Please do!:D I actually HAVE a 3 year old gelding who fits the bill - obviously green - but so safe you'd put a kid on him. Should mature no more than 16.3 - plenty of bone. Also got a bay - same age - but I think he'll make 17hh - or possibly 17.1

I VERY rarely have anything older - they jump off the shelf as fast as they are backed and riding quietly - but the two above I haven't advertised yet as I wanted to put a little more work into them.

Hello! I have a 5 yr old massive grey dinosaur by unbelievable darco for sale. She's on my website www.ntequine.co.uk and was home bred by a friend. She's green but quiet and easy. Can be a bit backward in the school at the moment but that's just greeness and needing more hacking to send her forwards more. Her name is bookham
Lodge rain. Price is very neg. As she needs to be sold. Would be a great hunter type.

I don't think it exists:D:D:D

It does, I own it :) (only mine is only 16hh, is hogged and trimmed to show and lives in at night, but would be quite happy hairy and living out too) he rides on the beach on the buckle yet gallops like stink when asked and pulls up by thought alone, hacks out alone and in company in any traffic across any ground at any speed, is light as a feather, stands like an angel at the biggest county shows (and often comes home with some ribbon, bless him), pricks his ears and behaves in evening performances, has won 2 of his first 3 dressage tests, is naturally very forward and supple laterally but is mega safe and mega easy...I could go on...I am THE luckiest girl in the world....

His biggest fault.....erm....he's not too keen on umbrella's (twitches an ear and might even snort), oh, and he is a dirty pig in his stable...

Ok, ok, enough gloating, lol.....my point is...it is out there, I promise...be patient and stick to your guns, you will find what you want!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(oh and also mine is only 5...so don't rule out a younger horse completely, he is far easier than some of the much older horses on our yard. My previous cob was also an old head on young shoulders)

When I described what you have just described my dealer said "you and everyone else who I speak to!" So maybe you will find it but it may take some time.

Fany misses the height, and xc and of course is a mare but everything else she hits! When we were viewing her the seller had 5 calls about her! I think they are the horse everyone is wanting at present. Does it have to be so tall? Because if not a Sec D x TB could be an option.

Have you looked at percherons and their crosses there are several breeders in and near cambridge.

I have a 16.3 percheron mare who I bought at 3 1/2 now 5 she is wonderful, approx 17hh grey rides drives hacks alone . Really good temperament and a good doer.
