Recently (last weekend) took on a yard - not a money making excercise (thank god!) but couldnt give up the opportunity. Am running it as primarily a DIY yard as i will be working as well. Have advertised in local tack rooms, and a few sites online. Have had one or two calls but nothing fruitful!

Thankfully not relying on it for money, and can pay my rent ok, but am wondering - WHERE ARE ALL THE LIVERIES!??!! Is it a seasonal thing? Do people tend to move during the summer more!? Only been advertising a week, so perhaps i'm being a little impatient

Any other ideas for advertising? Thanks

They have run out of money and are selling up ! - my yard now has 10 empty stables - totally unheard off, this time last year i had a waiting list and a field full of grass liveries - one by one they are either selling up or moving on!

Joy!! i know its a crap time economically to take on a yard. Oh well....i'll just have to sit tight and wait...hope you're ok with 10 empty stables

The are in short supply in this area I'm afraid. Have had 4 empty stables for ages, but I am choosy who I would rent to I must admit! A friend spent a fortune setting up a lovely yard near Canterbury and is struggling to exceed 50% occupancy!Another very experienced lady locally has given up taking liveries as she felt that she couldn;t charge enough to even cover the cost of business rates, maintenance and electricity, let alone labour and topping up arena surfaces etc!
Good luck - with a nice yard and nice people liveries will appear I'm sure!

Ooo i know the yard you're talking about - VERY nice, but also with a hefty price tag attached - looked at it for my two before i had this opportunity of my own yard, and could no way ever afford it - even if i do have a good job with a decent salary! Oh well, will just have to sit tight and be patient i guess! Only been advertising a week

Sadly that is an ever increasing problem to yard owners

,the cost of maintenance feedstuff etc has gone through the roof yet the original liveries salaries are still the same and most couldnt afford a massive hyke in prices, tbh a £3 a wk would probably make some squirm, but what do you do as a yard owner?Put prices up and risk losing or earn a pittance and keep them?Sadly, liveries want to dissappear and do it themselves when you put up prices but realistically through the winter chances are it costs them no less(probably more, because as a business you can buy in bulk and usually get discount),no logic really

Kittykatcat - keep smiling! I set a business up in May last year (not equestrian) and for the first few weeks you do have moments of self-doubt but you'll turn the corner and won't look back!

I notice you say you primarily do DIY livery. Would you ever consider doing full-livery? If you wanted to get the first punter in the door I've got a 4yo Chestnut who i'm looking to find a short-to-medium term home for (1-6months). Although finding the right livery yard is very important to me, I'd also love to be able to help out someone whose just started out in business!

In any event the very best of luck and will keep fingers crossed for you!
