I have been thinking about this for ages! Now I am ready to take the plunge.

I am looking for a colt to take on, raise and most of all love!

I don’t have allot of money to spend, I am not looking for any HRH blood line, just something normal that will make between 14 – 15 hands.

I have a beautiful yard, wonderful horses so whatever I chose will be very lucky as they will be going to a loving home.

Where do I go to buy in Kent/Sussex area?

Thanks!

I think I may need to go to the dealers.....

If you want to buy something at the cheaper end of the scale, you ought to go to an auction. That way you can look at all sorts of animals at one time.

Besides, what do you class as cheap ?

That is extremely cheap. You could probably get a native pony foal at an auction for that. But you should remember a badly put together animal costs the same to feed as one that is correctly put together.

You should go to one of the horse rescue places, they will have foals that need a good home. They come in sorts of shapes and sizes.

I class £200 - 300 as cheap.

It doesn't have to be a colt.

I think the only place you will get a half decent youngster to make 14-15hh for that kind of money would be Cloud Cuckoo Land I'm afraid!

It might be worth saving for a bit longer so you have a bit more to spend......as someone else said, a bad one costs as much as a good one to feed & look after.

Thank you for the suggestion of looking at the horse rescue sites. I have this dream of opening up a TB ex racer sanctury one day!

Before winter hits, there are always cheap (er) horses around, cheaper still around January when hay is running short and prices have rocketted.

I have watched our local prices hit rock bottom here, 2 weeks ago there was a 3 year old QH mare (not bad looking) in foal, offered at $800, last week she was $600, yesterday she was $300. If I wasn't cutting numbers for winter I would have snapped her up, and possibly the 12 yo Standardbred at the same yard at a similar price.

As always, it's caveat emptor isn't it? Unless someone is really down on their luck, desperate, and you are up on yours, one tends to get what you pay for. Still, go in with your eyes wide open and you may find what you are after. If you are going to the auctions, don't forget to have a look in the lorry park, I have bought, and sold, reasonable horses out of the ring before now. Stick to your guns, and smell the horses breath.

250 guineas would have bought you a nice NF colt foal yesterday at Beaulieu Road, all of which were likely to make 14hh minimum. There were several I saw going through which made that kind of money. Little ones were going for peanuts sadly.

I would deff go to ashford next week! There will be some real bargins, if you do a search I'm sure you will find the catolouge now.
try these- all entered for next week-
