its for my mare who is 30. After last winter, I had decided that this October was going to be her last month with me but she is doing really well at the moment she isn't ready to leave me, so I need something to keep her dry until she needs her 200g rug! I don't want to spend loads on an amigo or anything like that but at the same time I don't want an unknown brand!!

Any recommendations or does anyone know of any sale sites! I tried to get her one a month ago in the Robinsons sale but they only had combos, and she will be too hot in that!

I'm following this as looking for the same - I want cheap and cheerful for my habitual rug trasher :) They all seem to be either way too cheap or too expensive if you know what I mean!

Ruggles do them for about 45. My lightweight no fill leaked on the first day of use but to be fair their customer service has been good.

hahah Not sure I want to get one if its going to leak though! I've never used a ruggles, but I do have one ready for my shettie this winter (a friend gave it to me)

There are lots of very unknown brands, which always worry me!! my worst rug purchase ever, was a rhinegold, so I'm not scared to buy something that I've not used before!

I would use a summer turnout until moving onto one with a fill.

I'm doing this just now and he is warm as toast.

I Really rate Geetac for good value turnouts. So far I've not been dissapointed in them and have bought again for this winter. They are 1200D which really makes all the difference. I refuse to pay a lot of money for something that has potential to be trashed in a second!!!

GemG - Her light weights are just not up to the heavy rain, even when she's been standing in the field shelter they've been wet through, luckily she has 3 but they just arent enough.

She's a very warm horse but she has been shivering a few times, so does need more, but 200g is currenlty too much.

Swish equestrian. Good customer service , reasonable prices, nylon lined, big tail flaps and 1200d. I just wish their style of rug fit my girl but it doesn't. Massively rate them :)

I know you mention your worse buy, but ive got my lad in a rhingold 100g std neck and its brilliant. Im really pleased with it.
However shires do a nice one too

I recently bought a Shires Tempest 100g rug for old lady. I'm so pleased I did. We've pretty much ditched the no fill lightweight rug now to be honest. I got the one with a neck and it's been excellent.

Very well made rugs and fantastic quality for the money. I always buy Shires now.

My 3 have a shires tempest, a wetherbeeta freestyle and a Derby House.
I don't like the Shires much, it does the job but I don't like the fit on my tbx. The weatherbeeta is great, not sure how expensive they are these days though, it's a few years old now!
I really like the Derby House as well, and they often have sales on so you might be able to get one fairly cheap?

I agree about the weatherbeeta if I buy 6" they fit my bigger horse as well who often needs 6"3 and the same with derby house I bought a few of there rugs last year and really rate them and the fit is good on my Arabs.

Sounds like shires is winning at the moment, so will pop to robinsons tomorrow night, they are 43 quid in there but saves the wait and the extra postage
How do the sizes come up? She's a 6'3 in most rugs but my experience with most shires products is that they are massive, are the rugs the same? Or true to size?

I'd love to get her a weatherbeeta but I've not seen any in 100gs

My tb who is a 6'6 in weatherbeeta is in a 6'6 shires tempest 100g so I would say true to size.

Love Shires, my Ruggles leaked also and I didn't have such a great experience with customer service. I did get my money back but the woman whose surname is Leake(!) spoke to me I felt as if she didn't believe me!

buy 200g rug, leave over pony's stable door overnight, arrive in the morning to find the lining torn open and pony kipping on a nest made from most of the fill from the rug, stitch up lining while swearing under your breath

voila - semi fill rug :)

I have numerous Ruggles rugs and I haven't had any leaks. I really like them and they are excellent value for money. Compared with some of the more expensive brands who sometimes only have 600d outer Ruggles have 1200d outer. The new ones this year are Teflon coated.

Hmm. Mine is one of the new Teflon coated ones, brand new and leaked all round the stitches for the neck cover d rings and the stitching where the tail cover was sewn on. They made it sound like they hadn't had any other complaints and offered to replace it with a 100g for no extra charge but it was the no fill I wanted so I just said I'd reproof it myself as I can't be bothered faffing around and it's one of the few rugs that seemed to fit my horses shoulders without strangling him.

I'm also a huge fan of Shires rugs, and am now loathe to buy anything else (I've just bought another four from them for this winter). I find that they tend to be true to size.

Yes they are true to size. I bought a no-fill Shires Tempest recently. My boy has three 6' 3" mark Todd rugs which fit him perfectly and the new 6' 3" shires does too.

SHIRES!!! Tempest 100g fab rug, same rug at my yard worn by thoroughbred, heavyweight cob, lightweight Connemara & fits them all superbly, waterproof. Ticks all the boxes.
