Ive seen in a couple of 3.5t a padded thing that attached somehow, presumably to protect the horse bum and tail when travelling. Ive just got a 3.5t, the difference in his travelling compared to a 7.5t is amazing but he rubbed his tail a bit and a bit of his bum as he must have used the back wall to balance. Nothing bad, he barely moved, arrived stress free but thinking of buying one but dont know what they are called.
Thanks in advance :)

I do wonder if a tail guard might be your best bet - mine rubs his massive cob tail into a bog brush leaning on the breech bar of the trailer, which is covered in soft smooth plastic so you'd think would be ok. The only thing that stops it is a nice thick tail guard with fluff on the top. I like the Premier Equine ones (I have one of these - https://www.premierequine.co.uk/products/techno-wool-anti-slip-tail-guard) - they do various slightly different designs and at less than £30 might be worth a try before adapting your lorry. Apologies if you've already tried that and it's failed.

I had this problem and couldn't find anything so made a pad. It was made from fleece and stuffed with wadding, rectangular in shape and held in place with velcro. We hung it from the partition rail inside the lorry so that it was positioned behind the horses bum. It did help, prevented those grey stains from the lorry wall and stayed in place. It could also be taken down and washed.

Probably yes, hes a Highland with a lot of tail, never wore a tail guard before and just seen this padded thingy and thought it was a good idea.
To be honest, mine hadn't worn anything before I got her, did the same as yours the 1st dozen outings in my 3.5 rear facing (had only trailered or big boxed before). I popped a tail guard on and within 2 months she had stopped sitting back. Tail guard abandoned again ?
