I live in Holsworthy but am desparate to go on a decent hack off road. Okehampton is fairly close and the moor but WHERE? Need somewhere to park lorry etc. Is there anyone local who can give me directions from holsworthy/Okehampton etc or even a post code so I can look it up? Thanks

I don't know the moor at Okehampton that well, I am much further down but I know that if you came down as far as Mary Tavy there is plenty of parking and you can pretty much go for miles.

If you take the A386 towards Plymouth, going through Sourton and Lydford you will go up a hill and then hit the moor. As soon as you get to the moor you will see parking on left hand side.

I think it can be a bit wet and it is also a firing range so best to check times etc but I know alot of people ride up there.

I hope that helps a bit, I don't know youe area at all and I am the otherside of Tavistock so sorry if the directions are really ropey!

Great parking at the army camp - and at Meldon resevoir. You can park in Belstone car park - and that is easy access to the moor.

If you park at the okehampton army camp you follow directions through Oke to the camp - but don't turn off the road. Follow right up over the cattle grid at moor gate. you can then go straight on and pull onto hard standing up the top of the hill. or turn right and you can pull off onto the grass about half a mile on on the RHS.

At Meldon - just park in the resevoir car park. You can then go over the reservoir and ride up some fantastic hills. There is also a bridle path that runs alongside the reservoir.

Basically if you can get your lorry/trailer off the road you can leave it anywhere on the moor - it would be worth while driving down to have a quick look before you bring the horses so you know where to go. And don't forget weekends are normally firing free as are bank holidays and most school holidays, but do check before you set out in the week

I went up to Sourton yesterday! I'm near Halwill Junction so very close to you. I think this is the closest place to get onto the moor. I just stayed around the tor as I was by myself and wasn't sure about exploring too far as the weather was looking dodgy! The car park is easy at Sourton and you're parked right on the moor.

I also go with a friend sometimes and we get onto the moor by the Highwayman pub (on the way to Lydford) after parking at her house, that's a nice circular ride.
