I hope this doesn't count as advertising or anything, please feel free to PM me if it's easier!
Basically, my friend and I are looking to buy a second hand lorry together. I bought privately last time from someone who I thought was honest (a local tackshop owner) but got stung when it needed its first MOT as most of it was held together with foam! I want to buy from a reputable company and ensure it is fully serviced before I drive it away. Oakley have one I like the look of but it is just out of my price range.
Where did you get your lorries from and what guarantees did you get with them?
If we buy together we have a budget of £6000. If I buy on my own it is a measily £3-3.5k.
I know this isn't much to go begging with but I only travel up to an hour away for shows and need to ensure I have money left over for emergencies.
I have considered a 4x4 and trailer but then it's at least £3k for a car and
£2k for a trailer!

doesn't have to be that expensive to buy a towing car - i bought a jeep cherokee for less than 1k as all it was going to be used for was towing the horsebox. works brilliantly as a package and you can always use it when weather is really rubbish - plus limited mileage ins is a lot cheaper

I assume you are looking for a lorry over 3.5 tonnes?
If yes, then do you both have the correct licence to drive it?

If two of you buy it then I would make damn certain that a contract is drawn up between you because freinds can fall out !!

With the second hand car market now so low then I reckon you could find a decent occasional towing vehicle for a low price

If you already have a car then how about trading that in for a better towing vehicle and good second hand trailer?

Do you have a full B+E licence?

Thanks for the replies. I had a Jeep Cherokee but found it lacked the towing power even though I had a lightweight box. I will have a scower about for other good towing vehicles but I live in Suffolk, although a very rural county, 4x4's are at a premium here and we live miles from any big dealers. If only we had a motorway!
Take two horseboxes is a fantastic website. I think I'll definitely be putting in an email to this lady. If I can persuade the parents to help (unlikely!) maybe she can find me something.
I have the correct licence and used to drive a 7.5 tonne Ford. My only hesitation is that although the other lady and myself have been good friends for several years it would be sooo much better to own it myself. Although, after the first MOT on my Ford cost me £2000 sometimes its nice to think you can split a bill.

Not sure how far you can travel, but I looked at several dealers last yr when I wanted a 7.5t I purchased from Chris Day of C AND R DAYS near Dunstable, has a website but its not up to date,so could call him from no on website. I also viewed at Horseboxseller.com who are near Silverstone on Bucks/ Northants borders. They have a huge selection, but I couldnt actually happily drive the suitable boxes they had. Looked privately too,but spent alot of time and money doing so. A dealer may,or may not, cost more than buying privately but they tend to have a few boxes to view in one place. Good luck
