in 2011 want to be able to ride Echo properly (and maybe start doing some work on Archie who's nearly 2 New Forest) but I'm still new to horses and thrown in rather at deep end don't know where to start. (don't want to do any fancy just be happy hackers). Echo has been broken and I have sat on him whilst on lead rope as I'm only a basic rider feeling bit nervous - I like to think got a good relationship with both my boys they know the basic commands - don't have a menage or school as such but do have a couple of fields to work in. Lady was meant to be helping me have nothing to do with anymore (thank god!). Mel down road offered to help but don't like to ask as she's busy with kids. Wondering if I should just go for it (ie get on him and go for it and stop being a wimp) or try and get someone to come out and do some basic lessons with Echo and myself - any suggestions (we're based in Tadley, Hampshire)

I think the best idea would be to get some proper lessons to give you a start. You should be able to find qualified instructors on the BHS site, otherwise ask around at local stables / tack shops.

The ideal solution would be to find a good yard where they had a school and resident instructor.Archie is too young to be broken to ride but you should be well on your way with groundwork. I am sure you could get someoneto come out to help you.

I don't have much experience in this field (pardon the pun) myself but I definitely think this is a time when you need proper help. You could inadvertently get yourself into big problems if you don't start a horse off properly. Maybe get someone to at least start you off in the right direction, and then once you know what to do, you can go away and practice on your own! Just think long term you may regret trying this on your own especially if you are not confident. Good luck, hope it's a fun journey for you all!
