What happens to competition/eventing horses when they stop competing at higher levels? Are they capable of competing at lower levels if they don't have any injuries or are they just retired?

Waffled a lot!
Many go back to their owners, and are passed onto junior riders to give them experience. Some retire. We had two ex-badminton horses at the stables where I did my AI - they were so good to learn more advanced riding on, as the lesser schooled horses didn't know as much, so you didn't always get the reactions even when you'd asked correctly - whereas with the advanced horses you did...
