I'm hopefully getting some transport at some point in the near future and was wondering where you lovely East Midlanders box out to for hacking/ horsey fun?

we're based near to Ashby de la Zouch, so all options within or around an hour travel time welcomed :)

You need a permit to ride in Sherwood Pines, it's £40 a year, if you park in the Sherwood Pines car park itself you most likely will be collared! You will need a good map as the woods are large. Maybe a call to The Dog and Duck at Kings Clipstone is worth it, if you buy a drink they might let you park up for a couple of hours! If not check other pubs on the boundries. This link has a file that might be useful for you too http://www.gedling.gov.uk/mobile/leisure/parksopenspaces/walkingridingcycling/
p.s you can get into Sherwood Pines there, through the back path so to speak but I've totally not told you that!

Stapleford Park TROT ride near Melton Mowbray is great - lots of lovely long canters and 18 miles of off-road routes! It's privately owned but it only costs £7 for a day pass to ride around it! :)
