I posted this on another forum awhile back, but was curious to see your responses as well. I read this year that to make the most out of your hat's longevity, you should store it in a area where the temperature is moderate and consistent. They say to "never store it in a hot car or in the tack room when it's below zero [degrees Fahrenheit]."

I don't know why, but I never really even thought about it...even though the tag said to "store at ambient temperature." I always used to keep mine at home and bring it out each time to ride, but once I got a tack trunk a few years ago, I've left it out at the barn since. Now that it's gotten cold out, and I have a newer helmet, I've brought it home again.

I wonder how detrimental it is to store it outdoors in a trunk, since say during the winter - the temperature swings would be more great if you're taking it from warm to cold and back again on a regular basis, versus it being "cold" all the time. (Not to say that temperature swings don't happen outdoors - as we all know how the weather can change several times in a day!)

Where do you store yours?

Mine lives in a plastic stack-a-box in the shipping-container that we store all our stuff in. I've put silica desiccant bags in the box in an attempt to keep the damp at bay. I'd never really thought about the temperature it's stored at though!

I have two in the tack room, one in the car and one in the trailer. I presume they're multiplying as I don't remember going out to buy so many

Mines in my the boot of my car as i get paid to school my clients horses so always need it with me. My boot is full of riding gear so doesnt roll around but it prob isnt ideal!

I have one of the Shires long boot and hat bag combo's so it is in there, hanging from a hook on the wall of the tack room. I'm guessing it will get chilled, but probably not freeze as it is in a padded environment.

Heat and sunlight affect the stability of the plastic so it's best kept in a dark cupboard where it is not exposed to excessive heat or cold.

Mine currently lives in a bag in my bedroom when not in use.

since having our yard burgled 2 years ago everything i can keep at home is kept at home - bit of a pain carrying it around but ill be dammed if the thieving bugars will ever take my hard earned stuff again!

I keep it in a hat bag in my car... my old helmet was kept in my tack room until one day I went to put it on and mouse poo fell out. Straight in the bin that went and never again will I keep my hat there ;)

If I'm riding regularly they both live in the car, but at the moment since I'm not riding the less expensive one is in its thin covering bag and the expensive one is in its padded bag in the house.

I have my everyday hat at uni so that gets kept in my cupboard and my showjumping hat stays usually in my room or somewhere about the house always have always will as keeps them nicer
